Nespresso C50-US-TP-NE Espresso Maker, Pure Grey

Nespresso C50-US-TP-NE Espresso Maker, Pure GreyRecently I was at a Disney hotel and they had a self-service Nespresso machine for guests. I fell in love the coffee. So, while standing in a line at Disneyland I ordered the U on my phone. I compared several of the machines and the U seemed to have the best features for the price. Plus, what man is going to order something called the "Pixie." Really Nespresso?

I have only had it for a couple of days and I will update this review if I run into any problems or have more to say, however this is my first impression.

Likes

* It was easy to set up. The instructions are good, although it seems as though they were translated from another language. The wording is clear, but sometimes awkwardly phrased.

* After a couple of cleaning cycles, you are ready to brew. I had my first cup about 10 minutes after unboxing.

* Its attractively styled. It's has basic utilitarian look, not overly "blingy" or gaudy.

* It comes with a sampler of 16 coffee capsules.

* All of the coffees I have tried are very good. I actually enjoy my Nespresso coffee more than what I'm served when I go out.

* I like hot coffee, but not scalding. Even the first cup comes out very hot.

* The water container can be set on either side of the machine or in back of it, which gives you more options for placement.

* It takes up very little counter space.

* The water tank holds 27 oz., enough for 7 lungo cups or about 20 expresso cups. I like the fact that is clear.

* Operation could not be simpler. Insert capsule, close door and brewing starts in about 25 seconds for the first brew, almost immediately for second and subsequent cups.

* It is very clean. Drip cup captures any dripping. No leakage. Capsules fall into a hidden bin that will hold 12 used capsules.

* You can select 3 different cup sizes. Ristretto, Expresso, and Lungo. The largest, Lungo, is about half the volume of a standard 8 oz. cup of coffee.

* It has all the feature you'd expected from a modern coffee maker such as auto shutoff. The machine itself is not inexpensive. However, for under $200 I feel its a good value for what you get.

Dislikes.

* The outside is all plastic. (However, to the eye it's hard to tell this.)

* Cost of the coffee. I knew this when I bought it, but each capsule is about $0.65. (see below for full story on cost.) This is certainly much, much cheaper than at the coffee shop, but it's probably 2 or 3 times the cost of bulk coffee. If you have a cup each day, you'll spend about $240 annually. You are paying for the convenience and coffee quality.

* The cheapest capsules seem to be those bought directly from Nespresso. You have to buy in multiples of 50 capsules (you can mix and match flavor though). In the U.S. they charged $6.50 for 2nd business day shipping for an order of 50 capsules. This is their cheapest shipping option. With shipping, per capsule cost grows from $0.65 to $0.80 each.

A note on caffeine content. Many assume that an espresso has more caffeine than a standard cup of coffee. Actually an espresso shot has about 6o-80 mg, compared to a cup of drip coffee that can have 100-200 mg.

Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. I plan to set my traditional coffee maker aside and have and espresso each morning instead.

I recently decided on a Nespresso system for my house. I purchased the Nespresso U, because it was their newest machine. I wanted the Gran Maestria (I will speak about this later), but for now the U is the machine I purchased.

The unit was packaged well. I was not anticipating the cheap plastic build quality when I opened this machine though. The unit is very lightweight and looks and feels cheap. I definitely do not like the look of the machine in my kitchen at all.

Now for the important part… the coffee. The unit makes a very good cup of espresso. It is very easy to clean and makes an espresso in about a minute (this includes the 25-30 second start-up time). The espresso is not overly hot, but I found that if you microwave water in your espresso cup for 25 seconds (which matches the unit start-up time), the coffee is the perfect drinking temperature. I prefer the sliding mechanism to insert the Nespresso capsule compared to the lift and drop of the Gran Maestria.

That said, I am going to return my Nespresso U due to the fact that the build quality is so cheap. I expected a little more heft, a little less plastic, and a little better looking unit (the magnetic cup holder concept is great, but it looks and feels again... cheap).

I decided to also purchase the Nespresso Gran Maestria. The coffee quality is the same as it should be, but the unit is more flexible for cup sizes which I absolutely love. The build quality is amazing with the exception of scratches and dents on the unit. For $699 I expect an almost perfect finish. I tried a second machine and this also had minor scratches, but no visible dents like the first unit had.

The LED lighting also adds a classy looking touch. The Gran Maestria is definitely a welcome addition to most kitchens, mine included. The milk frother is in a word… amazing. It is so simple and easy to use. The cup warmer is very nice (I will require this on all of my Nespresso machines going forward) and not a gimmick at all. It heats up the espresso cup in about 10 seconds and eliminates the need for the microwave trick like the Nespresso U requires unless you look slightly warm espresso.

Overall, the Gran Maestria is an amazing machine. If Nespresso can figure out the scratches and dents they will have a winner on their hands.

B150 Brewer

B150 BrewerI drink coffee pretty much all day and until I got a Keurig, I used a commercial Bunn coffee brewer and ground my own beans.

My kids got me a cinnamon colored Keurig B70 about 9 months ago. Truly, if it hadn't been a gift from my kids, I would have returned it unopened. I had read too many reviews about malfunctioning machine. Reluctantly, I set up the machine and brewed my first cup of coffee. That was it I was hooked! However, I was ready to battle Keurig if my machine began to malfunction, as so many others have.

Fortunately, my B70 worked so well that my grown kids began hinting that they would like one, too. Since the cinnamon color didn't fit especially well with the colors in my kitchen, I began looking for another Keurig so that I could gift the B70 to one of the kids.

I decided to purchase the B150 because of the larger, 90 oz. water reservoir and the fact that it would brew 5 different cup sizes (4 oz., 6 oz., 8 oz., 10 oz. and 12 oz.). I also felt that perhaps since this is a commercial machine, it might be more durable than a home machine. I've had it for about 6 months now and probably use it 15 to 20 times a day between all the family members.

Upon unpacking, I was very pleased with the heft of the machine. It feels very solid. The handle is thick, stainless steel, the water reservoir is much thicker plastic than the B70, and has double layer sides. It's obvious that this machine is meant for heavy use. The black and silver color looks well in my industrial style kitchen. It is a little larger than the B70, but not so large that it looks out of place in a home kitchen.

I really like the color, LCD touch screen. It prompts you to insert a K-cup, then you use it to select your cup size and then push the illuminated Brew button. That's it. As a side note, there are all sorts of lovely, coffee related pictures that run slide-show fashion across the LCD screen while your coffee is brewing.

The LCD screen will alert you to low water levels and when it's time to de-scale. You can also access the menu settings through the LCD screen.

This machine can be direct plumbed with an optional kit so that you never even have to fill the water reservoir. I haven't done this because my city has freakishly hard water so I only use filtered water in my Keurig. In fact, I would recommend using filtered water no matter where you live. I simply keep a Britta filter pitcher next to my machine and keep it filled throughout the day. It works perfectly because I have never seen white calcium deposits anywhere on my machine, in the reservoir, or on the puncture needle. Mineral deposits will kill appliances so filtered water is cheap insurance against that. Also, it makes your coffee taste better.

Another maintenance tip is to run 4 oz. of just water through after every cup, especially after hot cocoa. It keeps the tip from clogging and prevents transfer of flavor from one cup to the next.

If you are new to Keurig machines, one thing to keep in mind is that there is a wide variance in the quality of the K-cups. Some even have instant coffee in them (ugh)! Read reviews and then buy small quantities before you buy a huge box. Some varieties I like are Keurig Wild Mountain Blueberry (seriously good despite the way it sounds), Keurig Kahlua Original, and Folgers Gourmet Caramel Drizzle. Tazo also makes some killer tea K-cups. If you sample a number of different flavors, you are bound to find some favorites.

Also, experiment with the cup size with each brand. Some taste their best with a smaller cup size and others require the full 12 ounces of water.

The Ekobrew Reusable Filter works very well, too, and I use it for a special blend of coffee I particularly like that isn't available in K-cups yet. It's more trouble than regular K-cups but less trouble than making a conventional pot of coffee.

You will find a wild range of reviews for Keurig machines and I believe there is a quality control issue during manufacturing. I think I got lucky that both machines I purchased function perfectly (so far). I was certainly ready to return my machines, repeatedly if necessary, if they malfunctioned as so many others have mentioned and I think any buyer should be aware of the fact that there are a relatively high number of machine failures. But when they work, I think they are wonderful!

We purchased this brewer recently and in less than two months began to have issues with it. It constantly gives a lift water reservoir message, will not pump water from the reservoir to the unitthe pump is audible but not moving any water! We paid over $200 for this unit. It was a replacement for a cheaper version that also developed problemsthought that a "commercial" system would be more durable and last. DON'T WASTE your money on this system! It's a shame because it did make good coffee for a very short time.

If I can prevent one person from wasting hard earned money on one of these pieces of junk, than I can feel like I've done something good!

Received our Keurig in a timely manner and works awesome for a small office. We had a B70 and it worked well for over a year, but I think it was not big enough for our team of coffee/tea drinkers.

This is a very nice device. I especially like the display/touchscreen and the graphic interface. The images make it VERY clear what is going on as well as what steps are necessary. I recommend this unit to ANYONE who wants a Keurig, not just the business community.

There are ridges inside the chamber. This is fine for the thin plastic k-cups because it forms it bends to the ridges. Because the refillable k-cups are thick plastic or metal and can't bend, they will not fit in this machine. This model is meant to be sold to a business. The intent is the business can sell it's employees k-cups instead of allowing them to bringing their own refillable ones because of machine limitations. Think of how much plastic they are waisting on a daily basis. Corporate greed at it's finest.

Espresso Stovetop Coffee Maker By Cuisinox (Mirror Polished Aluminum)

1 Cup Espresso Stovetop Coffeemaker in Polished Aluminum and Replacement PartsI purchased this Cuisinox Espresso Stovetop Coffee maker for my sister for her birthday and she loves it. She uses it every morning and it is probably one of the best gifts she has ever received. Very simple, inexpensive, no fuss, quick, strong, concentrated Espresso. The term "3-Cup" is giving a few customers a problem. It, in this case, does not mean 3 full cups (24 ounces) of watered down, drip-brewed coffee, but 3 shots (1/3 cup or approximately 2.6 ounces) of pure, strong, concentrated coffee with a thicker consistency. Espresso has more caffeine per unit volume than drip-brewed coffee, and this is what Expresso drinkers want. A quick shot to get them going; Espresso! This Espresso maker is probably not for those who want to drink coffee all morning, but for those who want the instant, long lasting charge to get them going and keep them going for hours and it works for her. I am giving this 5 stars because it does exactly what is suppose to do, make strong, concentrated shots of coffee (Espresso cup-sized). She says "It's just perfect!", "I love it!", "It's just right!". I hope this review helps coffee drinkers understand the difference in what they are buying. Do you want to take a shower or would you prefer a long bubble bath?

This item is very small. The description says that it's "1 cup" but that is misleading. It's certainly not 1 cup of liquid that it produces. And it's not for a coffee cup size drink. The bottom part that you fill up with water would hold about a half cup of water--at the most. And the espresso part holds about two tablespoons of espresso. It's tiny! I used to work at a coffee shop, and we used more espresso to make one small espresso drink. One shot of espresso would require double the amount of espresso that this maker can hold. So even if you did use this product to make yourself a shot of espresso, it would be a very weak one because it doesn't hold enough espresso to make a normal espresso shot.

I can't imagine how you would ever use this espresso maker. I guess it might be good for a dollhouse....

This is a great stovetop espresso maker. We enjoy espresso just about every day and whenever we go to Italy we stock up on the good stuff. This espresso maker is great quality for great coffee. I've had a few espresso makers of this style but this is the best one yet. Instead of the normal plastic ring that most others come with this one comes a silicone ring which I notice is MUCH easier to clean and it does a better job of keeping the coffee in the pot as it bubbles to the top reservoir. With the others the coffee sometimes spewed out the side a bit. What we also notice with this one is that the inside does not change much or oxidize as previous makers did. Highly recommended!

1 and 2 Cup Moka Replacement Gasket

1 and 2 Cup Moka Replacement Gasketthe dimensions shown were larger than the real item by 10 mm, making the gaskets too small ,not what i expected....

It is not a seller problem. I have an old stove top coffee maker and I needed a new gasket. The coffee maker has no brand and I am pretty sure the dimensions are not the standard ones.The gasket I received was a little too small for my unknown coffee maker and I miscalculated the dimensions. My bad!

Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee Maker

Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee MakerThe Bodum Santos Vacuum Coffeemaker makes excellent coffee. Smooth, full flavored, hot. This model requires more interaction than a percolator or drip coffeemaker. If you're not willing to participate in the coffee making process, don't purchase this coffeemaker. However, the end result is well worth the few extra minutes required. Some tips that may be useful:

1.) Use coarse grinds to avoid clogging the filter;

2.) When placing the upper chamber on the lower carafe, make sure there is a good seal between the two globes, as this will help in the vacuum process;

3.) Always make sure there is at least a centimeter or two of water remaining in the lower carafe, otherwise the carafe will crack;

4.) Allow the water and grinds to mix together in the upper chamber for a minute or two before removing from heat source (coarse grinds produce a weaker flavor compared to finer grinds, so allow a bit more time for the water to extract the flavor of the beans while in the upper chamber);

5.) Remove the entire coffeemaker from the heat source and carefully place on a cool surface, keeping in mind that the coffeemaker will be top heavy and hot;

6.) If the coffee remains in the upper chamber and doesn't completely drain to the bottom carafe, return the entire coffeemaker to the heat source again for a minute, then remove again to a cool surface;

7.) Purchase a good thermos or insulated carafe to transfer your remaining coffee to (Nissan Thermos is a good brand, check out reviews on Amazon.com).

8.) Coffeegeek.com and Coffeekid.com have additional information on vacuum brewing.

Pros: Coffee is hot, full-flavored, and not bitter. The process is fun. Clean up is easy, if done soon after brewing. Affordable from Amazon.com when on sale. Reusable filter. Coffee is hot, full-flavored, and not bitter. (It's worth mentioning twice.)

Cons: Capacity is only 8 cups (32 oz.). Filter can sometimes be unreliable. Uses more grinds than average peculator or drip models. Extra caution needed when using, as most of the coffeemaker is made of glass. Instructions are scant.

Five stars for a wonderful product.

I purchased my unit about a year ago from Amazon.com and after about a month of frustration with the filter constantly clogging, I put it out of sight (out of sight = out of mind). When I could get it to work properly, it was great because the coffee tasted the way it smelled wonderful. But, it was simply not worth the time and effort to get one pot out of 15 to brew properly. I tried burr grinders and the inexpensive type grinders. I tried coarse grind, medium grind, fine grind and everything in between with no success.

About two-months ago I remembered I had the Bodum Coffeemaker and so I decided to revisit the task of trying to make a 'perfect cup of coffee and it worked perfectly!

I use the Bodum Coffeemaker almost every day now and it works as advertised 100% of the time. I have developed a system that works for me by taking suggestions from several of the reviews from Amazon.com and from some helpful advice from a Barnies' sales representative about how to store and use coffee beans.

The one thing that I was probably doing wrong the first time was that I listened to a friend who thought he knew about how to store coffee beans. If you want to go from coffee beans to coffee dust, freeze the beans or keep them in the refrigerator I guarantee you that this will work. It does not matter what your grind setting is on your burr grinder because you will get so much dust that the Bodum filter will clog and coffee cannot get sucked back into the lower chamber.

I now keep my coffee beans in an airtight container in the pantry, grind them as needed and then follow these additional procedures to get great tasting coffee every time.

Make sure the seal is clean and dry and the top is pressed firmly down onto the lower unit. I use a gas burner at a medium-high setting and do not use a diffuser. I think that the diffuser may be recommended to help keep the handle cooler in case you do not center the pot over the flame. Also, be sure you put the lid on top of the upper unit. And, do use caution, because the handle does get very warm.

I keep the burner on the same heat setting for 30 seconds after all of the water (except what is below the tube) goes into the upper chamber. There is still a little water left below the tube in the bottom chamber that will continue to boil. Turn the burner off after about 30 seconds, remove the upper chamber lid, and you can do one of two things at this point. If you do not want to move the coffeemaker while the top is full, just leave it on the burner and in a couple of minutes, the burner grate will cool enough to create the vacumm in the lower unit. If you want to cut a minute or two off of the procedure, use a oven mitt to hold the handle with one hand while you use the other hand to 'stablize' the top and move the coffeemaker to an adjacent cold burner.

I can actually hear air being sucked into the lower chamber after all of the liquid has been removed from the upper chamber, which takes less than 10-15 seconds once it starts. I then use an oven mitt to hold the handle, remove the top chamber and put it in its neat holder, and pour my eight cups of great tasting coffee into my twenty-five year old Stanley stainless steel thermos. I now have great tasting coffee all day long.

After the top and bottom units have cooled, I remove the filter and clean both chambers being careful to not bang them against anything hard. The glass is thin, which it has to be, but seems pretty durable.

I give the unit five stars because I am the one who caused most, if not all, of the original problems by improperly storing the coffee beans which resulted in a lot of dust when they were ground. The taste of the coffee made by this unit warrants five stars.

I cannot rave enough about this treasure made in Copenhagen. I have used every conceivable type of coffee maker in the past, but this one is simply the best I have ever used. It is beautiful to look at, very easy to use and clean, and makes the best cup of coffee I have ever tasted. I ordered the electric version of this brand, but when it arrived, it had a defect, so I returned it immediately. I am so happy I didn't order the electric one because it was twice the amount of money that I paid for the non-electric one. I am going to tell all my friends about it--unfortunately you can't buy it in any stores, only through Amazon.com. Congratulations on carrying this absolute gem of a coffee maker!! This is really the way to make the best cup of coffee on a machine that costs less than $1000 dollars. I'm not kidding. When this device works correctly, it give you the best tasting, clearest (no sediment) and prettiest cup of coffee you have ever tasted Even Using The CHEAPEST Beans or Grinds!

PROBLEMS:

1. The spring loaded filtering device, although increadibly simple and easy to use and maintain did not work consistantly for me. Sometimes I would get a lot of sediment, sometimes crystal clear rich brown red coffee (perfect). Sometimes the top globe would drain completely (as it should) and sometimes only half way. I tried various grind coursness, filter adjustment, etc and never could get consistancy.

2. The handle needs to be longer and rounder. It is too short for the weight and feels awkward in the hand because of the way the bottom is cut out and shaped in general.

3. Glass broke on the bottom of the 2 pots. I left it on the stove and boiled out all of the water. 2 pots of coffee later a thin long crack developed leaking the coffee out on to my burner. Would like to see a little thicker glass.

4. Instruction book too skimpy especially for a coffee making technique that few have been exposed to.

5. The plastic stand for the upper glass globe should have a wider base to prohibit tipping.

GOOD THINGS:

1. The glass, although thin is pretty durable (in spite of it cracking on me after leaving it on the burner too long). It is really beautiful glass, even rings when you dry it with a microfibre cloth! Has a high clarity and shine.

2. It is easy to clean. Comes apart in seconds, rinse out, dry (works best with a microfibre cloth I found) and your done. I leave it out because I like the looks of it and people always ask what the heck it is!

3. It is easy and fast to use. Takes a few minutes to dump in the coffee and water (in separate glass globes/pots) and put together and start the coffee making process. It takes a few more minutes to have the coffee sucked into the lower pot and be ready to pour. Probably a 10 minute process total.

4.It's inexpensive! 40 bucks!

5. Makes the one of the best cup of coffee you've ever had even using the cheapest beans or grinds! In fact, I made better coffee at times using cheap grind over using custom roasted fresh expensive beans ground right before I put them in the pot. My suggestion, buy Kroger's brand standard beans (right from the grocery store at about $2.50 a pound), grind them right before you're ready to make your coffee and enjoy.

Summary, Bodum needs to tweak this product a bit. I'm searching on-line for another brand of vacuum pot today to replace my broken $40.00 bodum so I can compare.

Want Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee Maker Discount?

I live with a former barrista and coffee guru. He makes the coffee in our house, and he has that magic touch. According to my bean baron, the Santos is the best coffee maker he's ever used. I tend to agree; the Santos gets the most out of the bean's essence and preserves the delicate oils and acids that make for a superb cup.

Some caveats with this pot: this pot is made of GLASS. That's a good thing--plastic is less desirable as it tends to grab coffee oils onto its surface. Glass is about as inert as you can get. So, being GLASS, this pot requires care in use. It is a bit top-heavy and the tube leading to the lower chamber is apt to chip if you are careless with the spring-held filter device, which separates the upper brewing chamber from the lower serving and heating pot.

And this is a stovetop device, requiring attention to the flame or temperature of your electric element. No plug-and-play here, so this is best for entertaining or weekend enjoyment. For weekdays, I stick with our electric filter machine, which the Guru sets up for me the night before so I can stumble into the kitchen at dawn and press a button to get my caffeine dose. But...when we want exquisite gourmet coffee, this is the one we pull down from the shelf.
