ABLE KONE COFFEE FILTER 3RD GENERATION

ABLE KONE COFFEE FILTER 3RD GENERATIONThis product looks good and was nicely packaged, although I do find it quite expensive.

In my first trial of this filter, I used a medium grind (ie for drip coffee) and wasn't gentle pouring the water, so I noticed that water flowed too fast, and the coffee was very cloudy with as much sediment than my french press. I was very disappointed, but then I watched a video on youtube (Quick Look at the New Able Kone Coffee Filter) that mentions using a finer grind. It sounded counter-intuitive because with a french press you need coarser grinds to reduce sediment.

However it turns out that with this filter, the coffee itself acts as part of the filter, so a finer grind reduces flow and helps do tighter filtration. With a finer grind you don't need to use too much coffee either. The sediment will be less than what you get from a french press, and the Chemex body design actually helps trap some of that when you pour your coffee.

So, here is what works for me, hopefully these instructions will give you a nice result without need for scales or thermometers.

1. Use a medium-fine grind, something in-between drip coffee and espresso.

2. For getting two 12oz mugs out of my 6-cup Chemex, I use 4 tbsps of coffee (about 20 grams). Put it in the filter, tap it to get it all to the bottom, and place on the Chemex.

3. Boil the water and let it cool for half a minute so it's not too hot.

4. Pour enough water to get all the grounds wet, and let it sit for a minute or two. This is an EXTREMELY important step that conditions the coffee for the rest of the brewing and makes a layer of coffee stick to the filter for tighter filtration / reduction of sediment.

5. Pour the rest of the water SLOWLY, and into the center, without letting it rise in the filter much. Be as gentle as possible in order to avoid loosening up the grounds that are stuck to the filter. Stop pouring when the coffee level reaches the "dot" in the Chemex lower body. The brewing process should take around 5 minutes or longer. If it takes less time, you may need to pour slower and/or use a finer grind.

6. When dripping stops, pour yourself a cup! If all went well it should be very flavorful, and with minimal sediment. Don't forget to clean the filter as soon as possible, since dried up grounds are much harder to clean.

Please comment if these simple instructions helped you get the great results I achieved!

Many improvements since the earlier versions. The cushioned rim makes it much easier to clean. There is still some sediment, less than a press but more likely to mix in with the coffee. You might want NOT to pour water down the sides as with a paper filter, or it spends less time soaking the coffee.

Pour into the center or onto the grind, but not onto the metal.

The filter holes are probably state of the art, but I find that water escapes much faster than with a paper filter, hence spends less time brewing.

Great as alternative to paper filters (and "greener"), but paper still creates a clearer more flavorful brew with no sediment and is not expensive.

Bought it for a gift for my son. He loves it. I don't know if I would spend the money for myself though. I like paper filters.

I like the Kone coffee filter and expect to use it regularly. I am a longtime Chemex user. I bought the filter and find it easy to use and the coffee quite good. There is sediment but in my experience it settles into the bottom of the cup and is not bothersome. I wouldn't tip up the cup and drink the last drop, but the sediment is less noticeable than with the typical french press. I've used a finer grind and a typical drip grind and find the results to be very similar in strength and sediment.

The Kone does not hold as large a volume as the paper filters did. There is a gap between the sides of the pot and the sides of the Kone. Also the Kone does not go as low in the pot. For this reason I think it might not suit the largest pots as well.

Black & Decker 8 Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker

Black & Decker 8 Cup Thermal Programmable CoffeemakerI bought it to drink coffee. It makes a good cup and it saves energy. Once it brews the coffee it turns off. The coffee is very hot when it first gets brew. The clock stays on time. Do not have to worry about a glass and it breaking. It keeps liquids warm. The only missing button is a strength button. The coffee gets brewed rather quickly, I wish I could slow it down so that the coffee comes out stronger with less. I am now using it to brew green tea and it works great.

Thermal execution spot on. However, there are two fundamental issues with the design.

1. It's prone to spillage if you do not get the coffee basket assembled correctly there is a very good chance that you'll have a mess to clean up.

2. Thermally the carafe is excellent however, after 6 months the lid failed. The plastic leaver to pour coffee broke and the add insult to injury you can't seem to find a replacement carafe.

So this coffeemaker has tremendous potential if you can fix these really minor design issues.

1. I would recommend guide pins that will not allow you to close the water top unless they are aligned could fix this problem.

2. Perhaps a different material for the pour leaver or make spare tops or carafes available at a reasonable price.

Do this and you have a spot on product. Right now you just have one disappointed customer

NO MORE BITTER COFFEE!!!! I LOVE my new Black & Decker! I love how unlike most models of coffee makers with a glass carafe and a heated plate, this does not make mouth scalding hot coffee. I feel most coffee makers heat the water so much it burns the coffee, making it bitter and nasty. In my opinion this model makes the perfect cup. I have had none of the problems mentioned by other reviewers. I am nothing but pleased with my new Black & Decker, after trying several other (more expensive) coffee makers I must say this is your best bet if you want a good flavorful cup of coffee.

I understand why the others are talking smack about this machine overflowing and such, it has never happened to me. But no offense to these "challenged" people, their brains just are not working properly, I think it only happens to people that don't know anything about coffee brewing machines or are just plain coffee brewing challenged, although it has not happened to me, because I read the manual, and quite Frankly I also used "common sense" you just have to do two simple things, 1) Make sure the screw on Lid on locked tight (very easy, use the arrow marks) and 2) That the Thermal Carafe is properly seated on the heating element or pad so to speak, (I don't think it's an actual heating element but it looks like one) so the pause and serve round plastic nub underneath (spring loaded) mechanism is in the pushed up position. Let me tell you, I have had no problems at all, this sucker brews fast, quietly and I swear the coffee is still steaming hot after 3 hours, and since there is nothing on the coffee cannot burn, it is absolutely amazing, I wouldn't give this up for any other machine I have had. This is my first Thermal, and by far the best! I see other ones selling for 4 times the cost of this, I paid $39.99 with free shipping, can't beat that! Even after 5 hours the coffee is still warm, not warm enough to drink, but it's still warm. I have brewed it about 35 times now, not once did I have any problem. It seems the other people that have bashed it and given it low ratings just are not brew savvy! All you need is a half a brain and some coffee grinds, and BAM hot delicious coffee in two minutes! I love waking up to the smell of fresh hot coffee in the morning, and now if I oversleep the coffee is not burnt or cold!!! I recommend this to everyone, buy one today!! I LOVE THIS BABY!

I ordered this coffee maker because it was not the full 12 cups and more than 4 cups. It turned out to be the best coffee maker that I have purchased. Not too big, makes 5 cups just right, keeps coffee warm for 1 1/2 hours, it even saves energy by shutting off right after brewing, keeps acurate time, and a great pot.Black & Decker CM1509 8-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe

Mr. Coffee Pump Espresso Maker

Mr. Coffee Pump Espresso MakerThis is a very good machine. It is attractive and with a nice space on top for cups and assessories. The stainless look is clean and efficient looking although the weight of the parts do not necessarily convey a sense of strength and long lasting durability. It comes with two holders for coffee, one for a single demitasse and one for two demitasse. I would forget about the single and always use the double unless you are into tiny espresso servings. I also immediately took off the plastic tip for the milk frother. There is no need for that. This machine makes a cup of espresso with a beautiful crema. It is easy to use and the milk frother does a very nice job with a powerful pump behind it. The water container is easy to fill and large enough for hold quite a few cups. The drip tray is easy to clean. The machine heats up very quickly. The machine is also not at all touchy as to the kind of ground to get a nice crema. I was able to make a very good cup when I turned it on for the very first time. I was able to figure it out pretty well after a few cups by adjusting the ground and the tamp. It is very forgiving and user friendly. I bought this machine on a close out at Target and it was a great price and a great machine. You may not think Mr. Coffee would be the brand for a great espresso machine but this company has been very successful with coffee machines and one should not be surprised that they would do at least competantly with espresso machines. They hit it well with this model. I cannot speak to its durability. Some reviewers have had some issue with a similar Mr Coffee pump espresso machine (the ECMP-50 model). The model listed here is the ECMP-55, a very similar machine from the specifications. I highly recommend it so far although durability is still an open item that I cannot speak to at this point.

Enjoy it while it lasts. I bought one, and I make 2 espresso drinks a week, one on Sunday, and one on Saturday.. 3 months after I bought it, the seals are blown. Junk, in my opinion, but while it worked, it made good coffee.
