BonJour 9-Cup Cafe Milano Stove Top Espresso Maker

BonJour 9-Cup Cafe Milano Stove Top Espresso MakerI just got this espresso maker in and I am very pleased with it. I have always purchased them cheaply at TJMaxx or Marshall's in the past, so I am used to pouring the coffee over the sink or having a hard time unscrewing the top to clean it...but this one is much better. The top closes smoothly and there was absolutely no leaking. I suppose if you are used to pricier espresso makers, you may have more complaints, but for me, this one works great!

My brother had me purchase this for him and he also bought one for us. I love it. the size is great as now I can have more than oone cafe con leche. thanks big bro!!!

This unit provides a large amount of great tasting espresso. For those who need to cater for multiple persons, or for the hopelessly caffeine dependent. It does exactly what it's supposed to and there have been no signs of significant flaws. Complaints about build quality and price may have some validity, but I see no real issues. I was looking for a large, sturdy, dependable coffee maker and this appears to fit the bill perfectly.

I am very satisfied with this espresso maker. It makes very good coffee and is fairly solid. The one complaint I have about the construction is that the handle is plastic and feels cheaply attached. I take care of it, but I still fear that after prolonged use the handle may come off or break.

The pot is easy to clean and separates into 3 parts for washing it out.

I have no regrets about this purchase and recommend it to anyone looking for an economical way to manually brew a decent cup of espresso.

Capresso Coffee Burr Grinder

Capresso Coffee Burr GrinderI love coffee, and it's kind of a hobby for me. I roast my own beans, and have collected a respectable amount of knowledge about how to make a barista-quality cup at home. I've owned a Capresso Infinity 560 for five years, and I purchased this particular model for a gift exchange. It seemed like a perfect fit: an excellent price for a burr grinder, within the price range of our gift exchange, and it's a brand I am familiar and happy with. This model, though, is not nearly as good as the 560, in my opinion, because of the quality of the grind. It grinds much more evenly than a blade, to be sure, but it creates a lot of "dust" as well. If you really want to get a quality grinder for a great price, I'd recommend the 560 instead. It's usually around $80, but it's well worth the extra money over the lifespan of the product. That being said, if you simply cannot afford that extra money and must choose between this and a blade grinder, this one is clearly the better choice.

I just bought this grinder as a Christmas present for my wife. It grinds quickly and well and is fairly quiet much better than our old blade grinder. The ability to store whole beans in the top dispenser and to store ground coffee in bottom dispenser in the refrigerator is also handy. From what I have considered, it seems to be one of best lower cost burr grinders available.

But as to the "mystery" in my title, actually there are two mysteries:

1) Sometimes when your look for burr grinders on Amazon, this model does not show up. Not sure why, but it might have something to do with the fact that it does not ship directly from Amazon. The supplier names have also changed within the past 2 weeks.

2) It is not listed as a model on the Capresso web site. I tried to register it on the site but cannot, since it is not in their drop-down list of products. In fact, the Capresso web site has no mention of this model (or anything looking like it) in their catalog of grinders, registration page, downloadable instruction manuals, or replacement parts page. Update: the Capresso company e-mailed me that they make this particular model only for Costco, though apparently others get them to resell on Amazon. That still does not seem like a good excuse for Capresso not listing this model on their web site.

The grinder generally works quite well (grinds evenly and as finely as one might want), though the whole beans sometimes get jammed in the top of the grinder. It's easy to clear, but then throws off the measurement of how many cups-worth of beans you wanted to grind. It seems to help if the beans are dried out a bit first, rather than dumped right into the grinder from the freezer when still moist.

(APRIL 14, 2013 UPDATE)

I've been using this grinder for more than two years now, on an almost every-day basis, and the grinder is still going strong. Use it to grind beans for espresso, paper filter, and french press, and still works just as good as it did two years ago. One of the best purchases ever! I recommend it even more now.

(JANUARY 2011 REVIEW)

Apparently this model is made exclusively for COSTCO, and they were selling it for $30+tax. Found this randomly on the shelf @ my local COSTCO looks like they sell out really fast.

9 settings, and setting 9, which should be really course grind is barely course enough for paper filter. I assume that this is not the best grinder if you want a course grind for your French Press, but will be fine for a paper filter, or espresso machine. I do notice lots of "dust" but that's common, to some degree, with really expensive grinders as well. Static is NOT a problem. just tap the plastic container a little bit, and wait a few seconds before taking the container with the ground coffee out.

What it comes down to is that, if you're lucky enough to pick up one of these at COSTCO, you'll get a decent burr grinder for a great price, and it will allow you to grind your beans fresh.

Don't put your coffee (grinds or beans) in a fridge or freezer if you care about your coffee, taste, quality, etc.

For anyone who does not grind their own coffee beans, you are missing out on really great coffee flavor. It's not that difficult. And for anyone who is using their Braun rotary-blade grinder for coffee beans, STOP. It overheats the beans and interferes with the taste of the coffee. I would not have known this and just assumed it was the way the coffee tasted but for the advice of The Coffee Genius, a friend who knows from coffee to the point of taking it that one step too far and roasting the green beans, instead of buying it pre-roasted. I love coffee, but am not married to it, so grinding is pretty much pushing my coffee envelope as far as it will push. But the difference between burr and rotary grinding is noticable. If you are going to go to the trouble, you might as well get the best taste.

As to the Capresso Coffee Burr Grinder, it works fine for me. The coarser grinds work well for my french press. I use a medium grind for the Keureg, the finest for espresso, and I overgrind on the espresso setting when I want it almost powdery for the little Ibrik. I don't know if that's the right thing to do, but it works for me and if the coffee grinding police show up, I'll lie. The Capresso will grind from 2 to 20 cups worth of beans, you can use the container for storage if you make too much. It's compact and, while not quiet, doesn't sound like a jet is taking off in the kitchen either. For $30 here(or $27 at Costco) and such a lovely improvement in your daily cuppa joe, this would be hard to beat.

If you like coffee, it's just better when you grind the beans yourself. I now buy in smaller quantities and more varieties, and am having a great time experimenting. The Capresso is is easy to operate and presents no problems that I have found. My only difficulty with the machine: my niece borrowed mine and won't give it back. There is a lesson here. Don't tell people why your coffee tastes so good. Just shrug and say "They've really changed the way they make instant, haven't they."

You do get a little bit of the ground coffee on the counter, as noted by some reviewers. This seems to go with the territory, if you ask me. The Braun made a little mess too...and sometimes that plastic cup on top would stick -and when you gave it a good yank, half the coffee went flying. Look, you're grinding coffee. So you get schmutz on the counter. So you wipe it off. We're not talking toxic spill here or calling in the men in hazmat suits. And the truth is, I make a mess no matter what I'm doing, so this did not come as a shock to my system. If Martha Stewart somehow stumbled into my kitchen as i was preparing food, she'd tie a rock around her neck and throw herself off a dock. When I peel an egg, the people next door are picking shell out of their hair for two days. In the grand scheme of things, the coffee grinder mess is one I can tolerate.

And finally, two tips: First, If ground coffee sticks to the plastic container, put the container on the counter and tap it with a spoon--the static or whatever releases. Second, don't throw coffee grounds (home ground or otherwise) down the sink or garbage disposal unless you are eager to contribute to your plumber's vacation fund. Save them up in a plastic bag (in the refrigerator, where nobody can see them) and sprinkle on your roses. (And don't keep coffee or coffee beans in the refrigerator, it dulls the flavor...that's three tips, but who's counting.)

Enjoy.

Want Capresso Coffee Burr Grinder Discount?

I've owned cheap blade grinders in the past, and this is my first burr grinder. I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews of different grinders. I was originally looking for something in the $50-$75 range, but this grinder had better reviews than most of the other grinders in the higher price ranges. I am very happy with this grinder. I have had it for about a week now and have made fresh ground coffee every morning and have had no problems whatsoever.

It is not very noisy (not even half as noisy as a blender). I also really like the ability to store beans in the dish on top. I usually make a full 12 cup pot of coffee, so the first time I ground with this machine I set the little lever on the front to 12. It actually ground more coffee than what I would normally use for a full pot, and I like my coffee strong too. I changed the lever to 6, and that is the perfect amount of fresh ground coffee to make a full 12 cup pot. I also put the "fineness" dial on 4.5, which works really well for my Cuisinart drip coffee maker.

After reading tons of reviews of different grinders, and after buying this one and using it for a week, I can honestly say that at $33, this is probably one of the best coffee grinders you will find at that price point. Highly recommended.

**UPDATE 5-22-2012**

After owning this grinder for a month now and using it every day, I have had absolutely zero problems. It works like it should every single time. Very happy with this purchase.

DeLonghi EAM3200 Magnifica Super Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine

DeLonghi EAM3200 Magnifica Super Automatic Espresso/Coffee MachineI have had this espresso maker for a week now and it is everything I have wanted in a coffee machine. I have owned 2 other super automatics in the last 5-7 years a Saeco which cost about half this one and a Jura/Capresso which cost more than twice as much. I think the Magnifica so far is the best of the three for my needs.

The Saeco made good coffee, but was messy and difficult to clean. I splurged on the Jura thinking I would like all the electronic control over the process. I liked its automatic cleaning process and thoroughly enjoyed the machine until it broke. With no user access to its mechanism, I could not repair it.

The Magnifica is a perfect compromise, and the compromise is in price only. I don't miss the electronic LCD readout of the Jura one bit. The signal lights of the Magnifica provide the same information. And I actually find the manual adjustments for coffee amount and strength to be much easier to use and change compared to the electronic settings on the Jura.

The Magnifica has all the features of the Jura, including the automatic rinse on startup and closeout. The main difference is that the brewing mechanism will need to be cleaned regularly. I actually see that as an advantage since I will have access to it and can maintain it.

I have never used the frothing mechanism on any of the machines so I can't draw any conclusions about them. But if you want a machine that automatically brews great coffee with a minimum of fuss, and doesn't cost $2K, this is the machine for you.

This machine, in my opinion, is the best machine for the money. I compared and researched for two months, compared to Saeco, Jura or Solis the Magnifica line is well built and designed to last. I inspected the insides of all the machines and it seems that the advantage to Delonghi's late introduction to the "super-automatic" market was an improved brewing system.

The grinder is fast and efficient; the grinds are deposited directly into the brew system for brewing. In other machines, the grinder is far from the brew system, and the grinds are sent through a long tube before getting to the brew system. With ground coffee that sits in the tube, you are not brewing your cup of coffee, but the coffee the person before you requested. That defeats the whole purpose of freshly-brewed espresso.

The espresso is perfect on this machine, great color, texture and of course crema. The frothing is a no-brainer; just use a cold stainless steel pitcher with cold milk and you will create rich micro-foam. Make sure you use a large enough pitcher as the milk will double and even triple in volume. As other people have said, the frother might be too good, it would be nice to have some control on the frothing. For simplicity, the frother is very productive.

The Magnifica is so easy to clean; the inside of this machine is kept so clean all on its own. Just remove the drip tray and used coffee container to wash, then rinse the compact brew system under hot water.

The operation of the machine is a little tricky. READ THE MANUAL!! Many of the problems users encounter can be resolved by going through the manual. The espresso comes out hot, but with such a small amount of liquid (1-2 oz) in a cold cup, it will definitely cool down. Warm up the brew system by pressing the Decalcification button once before brewing, this will release some hot water. Also warm up your cups!! This is a must for any espresso machine. Also, if you need to brew again after frothing it will take some time to cool down the machine to the proper temperature for brewing. But as the user manual states, release some hot water through the frother while waiting for the brew lights to stop flashing. It takes me only 10-15 seconds to go from frothing to brewing again.

Anyways, my only dilemma now is trying to find the right blend of beans. After all the espresso doses I have had, I am starting to get very picky. The Magnifica comes with a can of Illy, and I find myself comparing every other blend to Illy, it is that good. But, I can't afford to spend $16 (CAN$) per can, which is more than triple the cost of other brands. I recommend finding a local roaster and trying their fresh blends.

My research included contacting two previous Magnifica reviewers that have had the machine for over a year now. They both stood by their 5-star reviews, and were completely satisfied with their machines. Thanks for your responses, Stephen and James.

If you are looking for a reliable good quality espresso machine, the Magnifica EAM3200 can deliver.

UPDATE (AUG. 5, 2008):

ALMOST 3 YEARS NOW AND STILL WORKING JUST AS NEW. I HAVE NO REGRETS AND WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR AN AUTOMATIC MACHINE. FRESH COFFEE BEANS IS A MUST, AND ONLY THEN CAN YOU ENJOY THIS MACHINE TO ITS FULLEST. ONLY CON IS THE GRINDER SETTINGS, I DON'T SEE MUCH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANY OF THE SETTINGS, SO TRYING TO MAKE A STRONGER ESPRESSO WITH CERTAIN BEANS IS DIFFICULT.

5 STARS AND HOLDING STRONG!!!

This was the best price point I could find for a super-automatic espresso maker. It was also among the most highly rated by other customers. The unit has been great! I've had it for 4 months. My friends are always amazed by the quality of the espresso and they all want one of these machines too, now.

A few tips:

DeLonghi does a factory test to make sure everything works right, so don't be surprised if you open the package and see a drop or two of water in the water reservoir and/or a few coffee grinds.

The frothing wand doesn't swing out as far as I would like (it extends about 1.5" away from the unit, so you need to buy a milk frothing pitcher with a relatively small diameter so you can move the frother around in the pitcher with ease. I bought a 20oz pitcher (so I could froth enough for 2 lattes at a time) with about a 4" diameter and it's a bit of a challenge moving the frother around evenly.

milk frothing takes some getting used to -buy a gallon of milk and just practice.

since the unit takes both whole beans and pre-ground, it's easy to switch between decaf and regular by just keeping pre-ground decaf on-hand and regular whole beans (or vice versa :-) ).

April 2011 update 5.25 years later the machine works great. Two observations: 1) on-off knob broke. it is plastic. steamer cannot function now so I need to buy a new handle. appears to be easy to replace once I source the part $5 or so. The steamer seems to leak a little water now when making espresso. doesn't seem to affect its operation though.

After doing the math on the milk, coffee, and even the syrup shots -and realizing that I can make for $.50 under $1.00 (size and shots depending) what I have been readily paying more than $3.00 for this quickly became a no-brainer.

I was concerned at first about the manual knobs (I'm a gadget kind of person) vice the electronic display... but I don't miss it one bit, and I like how quickly I can switch the quantity and strength of the coffee using the knobs instead. Speaking of "quick"... to reiterate what someone else already said, after stoping the steam function, simply open the steam valve for a few seconds (literally) and you will be ready to make more espresso right away -there is NOT a long wait between making drinks when using this method, and it is definately pointed out in the manual.

I did "have" to play quite a bit, and drink up some of the savings initially to figure out certain things: such as how many ounces of espresso would be coming out with the water quantity knob settings, etc. I had a quite a caffeine buzz the first full day after bringing the machine home. Actually... right out of the box it makes terrific espresso drinks -it is more a testiment to the quality that lead to all of the experimenation. We were so impressed with the quality that we now basically have a full coffee bar right in our kitchen! Syrups, sprkinles, you name it! My wife and I don't miss famous-name coffee house one bit! And so, I am still finding myself experimenting with various recipes for old favorites and inventing new ones.

Some tips from my useage so far:

Get 2 or 3 shot glasses with Oz measurements, helpful for measuring espresso output, syrups, and even the milk. Keeping track of how you make each drink, and making only one change at a time will get you on track with your personal favorites quicker.

If you think of it more like an exact art, like baking a cake versus making a stew or a chili, you'll get better results. I have my shots at about 1.5oz for a single shot, and 3 oz for a double shot. I've been using 0.5 oz of syrups (and never more than 1.0 oz if combining syrups), and then for milk I use anywhere from 2.0 oz to 6.0 oz depending on whether I am making a cappucino or a latte, and of course cup size.

Practice, practice, practice! Get to learn how to make "microfoam" froth -anyone can make big sloppy bubbles... go for a velvety smooth froth and you won't be disappointed! Do research online.. there are a ton of sites with great hints! The only "negative" thing I can say about the frother on this system is that there is no option use only a steam wand, vs. the plastic frothing attachment. On the upside, you can make "decent" froth without even doing anything... litterally just stick your frothing pitcher underneath -no need for any fancy gyrations at all... just stand there and breathe. Again, due to the quality of the coffee though, in striving to make absolutely you-know-what-retentively perfect foam I wish I could try my hand at doing it the "hard" way. Be sure to start with a cold frothing pitcher and cold milk, and get one of those frothing thermometers that clips to the pitcher -get your milk over 145, but under 170 (or you may scald the milk). Others who complain about drinks not hot enough, may be eliminating this part and adding relatively tepid milk to their coffee.

The Illy coffee costs, like that which comes in the box, costs about twice as much as other brands, but it has such an awesome flavor I find that I can use half as much.

Be sure to preheat your shot glasses and/or cups by using the hot water nozzle -in my experience the "warmer" tray doesn't really warm up the cups at all (even after exceeding the 15-20 minute wait suggested in the manual). It does however make a great place to set your shot glasses and/or cups while waiting to brew.

My unit seems to use the same amount of coffee for a single or double cup (or "pull"), even though the manual says that the waste ground removal tray can hold up to 14 single cups, or 7 double cups. (I got pretty sientific on this, weighing the tray, grouds, etc. before and after various pulls); Either way though, the expense, even is it using the double amount, is still WAY under what your costs are at the coffee house.

Be sure to allow the machine to come completely to a "stop" after first turning it on, before placing a cup under the pour spouts -it sends an initial flow of hot water to clean and heat the elements.

Also... Read the Manual!! Watch the Video! Then read the manual again!! I have a hunch that most people who are having issues with their machines didn't read the manual.

Cleanup is SOOOO simple! You will love this machine... even if you hate to clean your other appliances, you will be able to handle this one. Everything comes off/out so easily for a quick rinse ... no fuss, no muss.

The coffee, milk, and drinks, have all been wonderfully hot and delicious! With our new "coffee bar" (even in our small kitchen), I can hardly wait for our guests to come over this holiday season and share our passion for great coffee drinks.

Oggi EZ Grip Regular Coffee Canister, Black

Oggi EZ Grip Regular Coffee Canister, BlackI love this coffee can. I just wish it could hold a whole pound of coffee (or that it said somewhere in the description how much coffee it could hold). Otherwise it is a great product. Cute, blocks out harmful light, airtight, easy to open and shut, and comes with a nifty tablespoon that it holds on its side. Nice. Why couldn't I find anything close to this when I went out shopping? Bless the internet.

Great way to store coffee that protects coffee from its two greatest enemies: light and air. Finding the perfect solution has been a challenge; I'm so glad I stumbled on this canister.

I purchased this airtight canister to hold my coffee. It does provide an airtight seal IF the metal clasp would function properly. Initially upon receiving this, the clasp was not secure as the metal prongs go into the metal attachment. We had to take a pair of plyers to try and make it more secure. I thought that was the trick, but now I find myself every other day, having to manually tighten. It is small, and would not hold all of my coffee, I did have to use a ziploc bag for the remaining. I am definitely returning and will purchase something that will actually work.

These look good, but they do not seal and are not airtight as advertised. I expected truely airtight canisters to keep coffee and tea in....these are going right back to Amazon.

The silicon seal is a poor design and will not seal air/liquids. The closing mechanism is cheap and inadequate...it does not align properly and bends easily. The wire loop clasp distorts (bottom of the loop opens) when closed...so much so that it easily slips out of the clasp when pressure is applied during closing. If you're handy, you could probably braise or solder the loop shut to solve that problem; however, that would still not solve the inability to seal.

Alessi Moka Stovetop Espresso Maker - 1 Cups

Alessi Moka Stovetop Espresso Maker - 1 CupsThis is the Alessi edition of the world-famous Bialetti coffee "moka". In other words, the best Italian coffee-making tradition coming with super stylish design. I love it! I use it with "Illy Moka Ground Coffee, Medium Roast", and the result is a gently balanced coffee, neither too strong, nor too bitter.

NOTE This is the single-cup version, which is not very popular in the US. However, if you're alone drinking coffee, I really recommend you to go through the ritual of preparing it one cup at at time... that's the way you should enjoy it.
