La Pavoni Professional PBB-16 Espresso Machine Black Base

La Pavoni Professional PBB-16 Espresso Machine Black BaseI have had this machine since 1998, i drink on average 4 espresso a day, that is a total of around 17,500 espressos and it still works like a charm. I have serviced it myself about 3 years ago with new gaskets you can buy them for about 40 bucks. If you are looking for a solid machine that will last, this is it, pays for itself time and time again.

We've only had this machine for a week now, but I'm already in love. It makes the best espresso I have ever tasted... We are coffee snobs (roast our own beans even!) and this machine is perfection. It's quiet (so nice not to hear the thunk thunk of a pump!), easy to use, etc. We thought there was going to be more of a learning curve, but after pulling a few shots, we've got it down. The foam extension isn't the best, but we're getting some pretty good foam now a week later. This machine is perfect too for people who have limited counterspace. It looks SO sexy on the counter, is easier to clean than our pump machine, and takes up so little space.

I'm in love. :) (Don't tell my husband! ;))

Our machine has been providing us with excellent espresso (and lattes that are far better than those we have gotten at Starbucks) for six years. As others have noted, there is a bit of a learning curve. For example, too fine a grind, especially if it is tamped too tightly, will make it nearly impossible to draw a shot. Too coarse a grind will lead to watery shots that are useless. And I would guess that just about every Pavoni user has at one point pulled the coffee filter too quickly from the machine, resulting in spattered coffee grounds on walls and counters. While getting good foam with the wand takes some practice, I have had good luck with the foamer attachment, which works quite well and requires no skill. Further, the machine does require some maintenance. The wand seal started to fail after about three years; this has to be replaced or you will steadily lose steam pressure for foaming. But this machine is not nearly as mechanically complicated as automatic machines, and I would anticipate that it would last a lot longer than automatics. In the end, the obstacles to using this machine are easily overcome, and it should provide you with years of great service. The Pavoni also has an interesting quasi-steampunk look and looks pretty cool on the counter.

One footnote to a couple of reviews elsewhere that noted that after some time, the Pavoni would not draw water. Keep in mind that the piston screws into the connecting rod. Over time, it can gradually unscrew, so that when you pull the lever up, it will not retract high enough to allow water into the chamber. The fix is simple: just periodically tighten the piston. I am painfully reminded that you should do this when the machine is cold.

I have owned this machine (8-cup) for over ten years and everyday when I make my morning cappuccino I love it more. You can spend more for a machine that measures the coffee, tamps it, pulls the water through and steams the milk for you, but you can tip the kids behind the counter at Starbucks and they'll do the same thing. Making espresso should be a little art and a little science and this machine an impeccable balance of the two. If you aren't the kind of person who takes joy in mixing the perfect martini, making a risotto that whispers with flavor, or whipping a meringue to impossibly tall peaks, this probably isn't the machine for you.

The La Pavoni is for the person who will find tremendous joy in going to the lengths required to make a perfect cappuccino by hand everyday. (And don't bother using anything less than Illy Cafe coffee in it.)

Beautiful machine. My wife calls it "futuristic". I call it "retro". It uses steam pressure so there is no pump. Pump failures have limited the life span of other machines that I have bought (usually failure occurs after 1-1 1/2 years of use). The boiler produces steam and when the pressure on the gauge is ~.8 bars you lift the lever and release the hot water through the coffee. Steaming milk is very easy. The espresso/coffee tastes great. We've made multiple lattes at once with plenty of horsepower to spare. You do need to ensure that you don't build up too much pressure (by inadvertently leaving it on) or leave too little water in the machine (you can see the water level in the sight glass). Engineers will likely love having a machine like this in their home. A side benefit while you are drinking your latte is that it is great tool for teaching kids simple science concepts.

Black & Decker CBG100S Smartgrind Coffee Grinder, Stainless Steel

Black & Decker CBG100S Smartgrind Coffee Grinder, Stainless SteelI thought the only problem with this grinder was that it didn't grind up the beans completely until the grinder kept going even when the lid was removed! I had this grinder less than 30 days and, needless to say, it has been returned. At the speed these things grind they have to have safety features that work. It was an intermittent problem but even once is too often if you have to unplug the thing to get it to stop.

I have seen other people complain about this too. The coffee grinder sometimes keeps grinding even with the lid off. Do not buy.

This Black & Decker CBG100S Coffee Grinder needs to be recalled!

Mine worked just fine for about 6 months and then it malfunctioned the last time I used it. It ran without me pushing the on button and it continued to run without the lid in place. I think this is very dangerous! I have been using it about 4 times a week, and only for coffee beans. It had never been dropped or anything. It was clean and there is no reason for it to have done this.

I'm a weekend coffee drinker at home (get my coffee at work during the week) so I didn't need some deluxe machine. I was a little concerned that this grinder would be of good quality since it had a very reasonable price, but after it arrived and I used it I was very happy. Grinds great. You might get a couple of beans that did not grind all the way but this little grinder will give you a course or fine grind depending on how you like it. Why buy the big grinder to take up the counter space when all you need is this and when finished put it back in the cabinet where it doesn't take a lot of space to store. Great product would definitely recommend.

Read the instructions before you use it. They state explicitly to wait for the blades to stop turning before you remove the cap. They tell you multiple times to be careful because the blades are sharp. (And why shouldn't they be?) I think it's basic safety to just unplug it before you remove the grinds.

So far I have had great luck with this grinder. It is very powerful and sleek. I don't normally review products but I felt I had to pitch in my two cents because I don't think the negative reviews are justified. I would definitely recommend it. I got it for $15 at my local grocery store.

I will continue to use it and if it starts to show any decline in use or it prematurely breaks I will change my ratings to reflect that. However, so far it is serving me well.

Delfino Intelligent Coffee & Spice Grinder

Delfino Intelligent Coffee & Spice GrinderI've only used this Toastess coffee grinder twice so far and to be honest its the first coffee grinder I've ever owned. I did a lot of research before deciding on one for coffee beans for my French Press. But the Toastess' price, 12 cup capacity, and the grind settings helped me finally make the decision. I definitely like that you have the option to set the consistency of the grounds the directions recommend one notch above coarse for a French Press and that seems to be sufficient for the press. Removing the lid and cup to clean are really easy; although, the grounds, even at a coarse level seem to get pretty sticky under the blade after running the beans through. Best to use some sort of brush to wipe and clean out the grounds. Also, the cord winder on the bottom is definitely convenient and I like its small footprint on the counter.

One thing I have noticed as slightly strange, is when I remove the stainless steel bowl to clean, there always seems to be a few crumbs of grounds that somehow find their way through out the bottom, around the mechanism that rotates the blades. Really weird must be escaping somewhere around the blade in the bottom of the stainless steel cup. Not a big deal to just brush out with a rag, but odd nonetheless.

Another thing I was concerned about was the noise, and this isn't nearly as loud as I had anticipated. It also has a self-timer, so once you push "Start," it only last 4 or 5 seconds and it turns itself off, so there's no guess how long you should hold the button down.

I have no comment yet on how long the motor will last of course, but I guess I'm not really expecting it to last forever seeing as how it was only $40.

So, for the casual coffee drinker who likes to use their own beans, and isn't snobby about having a machine by a fancy manufacturer, I definitely recommend this machine.

I've had a number of coffee grinders over the years and this is the best of the blade grinders.

A number of features make this unit a joy to use. It has a cord winder built into the base and cord management is a breeze. And it has both a timer and a control for the coarseness of the grind. But best of all, it has a removable bowl & blade so that they can be washed either by hand or in the dishwasher. This means you can easily and safely grind spices or coffee and clean it thoroughly so that there is no cross contamination of flavors or odors when switching from one job to another!

It works very well as well as any blade grinder we have ever used. It's built sturdily and it is a bit larger than the typical, small, simple blade coffee grinders.

It is noisy when grinding hard spices like whole pepper corns, but that's a minor item.

This is really versatile!

Jim

well if you like to grind your beans for Espresso this is the grinder for you I have owned several and by far this beats them all I wish I had found this one long ago it is all most automatic well you do have to put in the beans ;o} you can set the amount of beans and how fine a grind you want and in less that than 60 sec you have the correct grind no powder and the grind is cool (in other blade grinders the grind gets hot and loses some flavor) with other units you have to guess how long to grind all the other units i have had will make a lot of powder as much as 1/2 of the load not this one it's seems to be the blade design I would assume it would also do great on regular size grind the uint can be set from corse to fine and it feels soild and it has a manual cord winder in the bottom I like the idea of "Manual" it seems the first thing that breaks is the "Auto-winder" This is a six star unit

It worked great the first time I used it and I would have given it five stars. For the second use my wife tried it but it did not work; it was totally dead. Since being not one to return things for a refund, I took it apart for troubleshooting. What I found were Two springy contacts that probably were not making electrical contact so I bent them out for better electrical contact. That solved the problem. I recommend this gadget for DIY people only otherwise have a favorite fixer in mind for a possible fix.

I have used an inexpensive ($20) Mr. Coffee grinder for a number of years. It has minor annoyances as others have noticed such as, the difficult cleaning, having to hold down the lid for grinding, the cord storage, etc. So, when I saw this, I thought it would make my life a little easier (I am a retired male, who wants to make my life as comfortable as possible).

Now that you have the background, here is what I have found. First the mechanism that you wind the cord back into the unit is stuck and won't unwind or rewind. I am fearful of forcing it, as I am I may break it. This means the cord length isn't adjustable. Luckily, it is stuck at just the right length for my use.

My next issue is that it has grinding settings for 2,4, 8 or 12 cups. Yep, you got it; I brew 6 cups for my self every morning. That simply means I will have to play with the grinding settings for me to get the correct grind fineness.

On the plus side, it cleans easily and I like that once you push the button it grinds and stops automatically.

In addressing other reviewers comments regarding the use of the unit, it states in the directions do not use for more than a minute at a time and let it cool down for 4-5 minutes after each use. This would mean that if you were grinding a fair amount of coffee, let's say for a week or so, (I grind only one pot at a time) you would have to stop and wait for the motor to cool or risk burning out the motor.

The directions also state not to grind any spices that have moisture as the machine is not designed for this use (including things like cinnamon sticks).

Finally, the directions state that you can freeze coffee beans for up to two months and the unit will grind frozen beans. I have a distrust of any coffee grinder manufacturer that states you can or should freeze coffee beans. There are plenty of websites that will tell you why this is not a good idea.

Overall, I will keep the unit and play around with the settings. However, my trusty, old, cheap Mr. Coffee will be kept in reserve.

Miele CVA4066SS 24 Built-in Whole Coffee Bean System with Plumbed-In Water Connection

Miele CVA4066SS 24 Built-in Whole Coffee Bean System with Plumbed-In Water ConnectionThe machine makes great coffee. I expected it to be very good, but it exceeds expectations. It is better than "that big chain shop" and I am a big fan of their coffee. (I am sure someone will jump in and say that the coffee at XYZ local coffee house is going to be much better than the big chain, and I agree with that; I am just providing a point of reference everyone will likely know). And yes, this machine's coffee compares favorably with the local house.

Hook-up of the plumbed-in water supply was a breeze, but I have done a lot of plumbing work. You will either needs skills with running copper pipe or PEX tubing if you want to install it yourself. Or hire a plumber.

Miele makes a couple of non-plumbed versions if you don't want a permanent installation. However, these types of machines are meant to be built-in to cabinetry so my advice is to buy the plumbed in version to eliminate the hassle of having to remove the water tank and manually fill it every day or so. If you are spending about $3,000 for one of these, spend the extra few dollars for the plumbing.

In terms of electrical, it does not draw so much current that you must have a dedicated circuit for it. If your existing circuit is almost fully loaded, you may need a new circuit. I just plugged it into an existing outlet, and so far (4 5 months of operation) no popped breakers so it should be fine on the circuit it is on. Consult an electrician for your situation.

I installed this as part of a kitchen remodel in my home, and so could build a custom cabinet for this to go into. One thing to note is that it requires a 24" deep cabinet. Standard wall (upper) cabinets are 12" deep, so this will not fit there. It needs to go into the same type of cabinet (depth-wise) as an oven or built-in refrigerator. I dedicated a 24" wide, 24" deep, and 96" high cabinet for this, with a wine cooler underneath and a regular cabinet above. That resulted in a mounting height that is about perfect. Much lower, and you would have to stoop over to get to it. Much higher and it would be dangerous, i.e.very hot liquids and/or steam at eye-level. You would not want to mount this in a standard wall cabinet since it would be too high. Standard wall cabinets are mounted about 18" above counter height, at close to eye level. You want this in the rough vicinity of counter top height. You could install it into a wider cabinet, as long as it was 24" deep. I spent a paragraph on that since you will really need to think through how you are going to install it since it is meant to be built in in a fairly standard way (narrow range of options), and not all existing kitchens may accommodate that design.

The seller (evVive Home) was very helpful, and I am pleased with purchasing from them.

In terms of daily operation, it is a little more work than I was expecting. It has a waste container into which the used grounds are deposited after each cup of coffee. The machine seems to have a timer that requests that you empty the container every other day. If you have this machine installed in a small office, that makes sense as the container would fill up pretty fast. But for the homeowner, it probably needs emptied once a week or less, and even then it would not be full.

The machine has a milk flask (like a thermos) for cappuccino, etc. This seemed like a good idea, and it works great. The problem comes in cleaning the tubes, which needs to be done at LEAST daily. Spoiled milk will make a person very ill, so this is critical cleaning step. The machine has a special rinse cycle for accomplishing this. It just takes a while, has to be done frequently, and requires a person to be present while it is going on. It is not like the regular automatic rinse cycle that requires no human involvement. It is enough of a hassle that I might only have a latte on the weekend when I can devote the time to the cleaning. During the week, I just dump a couple of espresso shots into microwaved milk.

The machine also has to have a weekly cleaning done too. I will admit I am lazy and only do this every few weeks, but it is also a little work. There are a few parts that have to be removed, but the mostly just slide out, no tools required. But you do have to get in there and clean a lot of small spaces.

All-in-all, it is a bit more work than expected, but I may have had unrealistic expectations. It isn't THAT much work, really.

In summary, I am very pleased with the machine and would highly recommend it.

the product ordered took a while to arrive, longer than expected. It arrived the day I left town . the delivery company supplier used was professional on the surface with email shipment notices and such but the delivery appointment took some time to schedule. They also delivered in afternoon instead of morning driver could not handle machine alone, i had to help unload and put in my car to get to the door (long drivewaY) , they would not deliver to door.

Machine installed one week ago instructions were a little vague in how to start up, called technical service who helped to walk me through setup. After descaling machine (did not say i had to do that, about 10 minutes) proceeded to coffee setup/hot water.

At first a couple drops of water came out. Coffee grounds were dispensed but no coffee. Tried 3 times. Nothing. Then tried hot water, Nothing Remove machine from cabinet and found that the machine had internal leak and was leaking water internally all over the floor, kitchen flooded. Turned machine off and Miehle representative called for a service tech to come repair. Glad they have company employees instead of service agents which was a big plus. their local dispatch called on Monday (installation occurred on a Saturday) and setup appt for Wednesday .

Tech arrived promptly, found a hose had disconnected internally during the first descaling process (miehle rep had said that was probably the problem) and sure enough he was right. I guess it happened before. Tech was very professional, wore booties over his shoes into house which was appreciated! he had all the proper equipment to service and find the loose hose.

He proceeded also to help setup machine for all specifics like coffee amounts, grind type, lighting, timer and so on. He was GREAT!

Also he told me about a 5 year service plan fully covers everything $249.00 which I think is a good investment of for a complex machine like this. I plan to use it. Had DACOR machine previous to this one and it was nothing but headaches. It looked good, built out of all metal but went through 3 under warranty and after warranty continuos service calls . That machine should be delegated to junk pile out of the box!

Miehle was much more plastic inside, not as attractive due to black plastic and a somewhat fake stainless steel look but after having it work for one day seems to offer all the features i need, the automatic milk cleaning / dispenser for capuccino is much easier to use and would like to offer an update in a month to let you know further details

We re-did our kitchen and created a cabinet expressly (no pun intended) for the a Miele system (old version 220 V). It lasted about 6 years and required repairs about every two years, usually for something that required it to be yanked out of the wall and carted to the shop for a week or two. The final straw was the failure of the grinder. Repairs would have cost nearly as much as a new machine.

Since we already had a device-specific cabinet, we searched around and found a demo machine for about half the price of a new machine. It has lasted 4 years and has required repairs on the same schedule as the original. Yesterday we were greeted with a clunking sound when we asked for a cup of coffee...the gearbox had failed. The machine is a goner.

We drink a lot of coffee, at least 20 cups a day between the two of us. While that's a lot, I would expect better at this price range.

We are going to have the former Miele-specific cabinet refitted so we can move on to something else. The Miele produced good coffee, but not coffee good enough to justify the costs, both initial and on-going.

When we started using this appliance in 2009 we were more than thrilled to think of the money we would save. BUT, in 2013 the milk frother failed. Our high end appliance repair company could not get it to work, and then they called the Miele regional repair technician who is refusing to repair it because he can't. The engineering is simply too complicated. Neither our appliance repair company or Miele will repair it so it is an expensive machine, sitting in the cabinetry, and we've had to go back to conventional coffee. Furthermore, the routine maintenance is time consuming and difficult.

Want Miele CVA4066SS 24 Built-in Whole Coffee Bean System with Plumbed-In Water Connection Discount?

Aside from the cost of the machine itself, we paid a lot of money to customize our solid cherry cabinets in order to accommodate a Miele machine. It's one of the reasons we keep paying to fix the thing when it regularly breaks. Nothing will fit in the hole and it's why I'm even on this site. I have to consider if I can find a replacement that will fill the spot. However, I've about decided it's simply not worth throwing good money after bad.

If you get one of these machines, you've got to be committed to constant financial outlays. Proportionately, it's worse than a luxury car when it comes to maintenance and repair. The supposed "best cup of coffee" you keep reading about in comments are nothing more than a classic case of trying to rationalize away the cognitive dissonance of buying it at all. Go get a $300 counter-top unit. Same exact thing, without the ostentatiousness.

Bella Espresso Maker Countertop Series

Bella Espresso Maker Countertop SeriesThis machine works perfectly fine after practicing the "Brewing Espresso" process described in the instruction manual and requires a certain timing. The machine works great when used properly and it's only $40?? Don't let the bad reviews stop you. Until you get into units costing $100 or more, espresso at this price is going to be the same.

For people having trouble, here are the steps I take for two shots of espresso. (Even though only 1 oz of water is required per shot, having more water helps with pressure.)

1) Fill carafe to the 2 "Cup" line with cold water and pour into pressure chamber.

2) Fill ground espresso into metal basket to the first line, or just use the scooper provided. Unfortunately, the tamper end of the scoop doesn't go deep enough into the basket so you will have to be creative or order a new tamper; then, tighten the basket into the espresso maker.

3) Turn the machine to "Brew" by turning the knob in the up direction. The orange light should come on.

4) Let the pressure chamber heat up to form steam.

5) When the espresso begins to pour, it won't be at the right temperature since the steam becomes hotter the longer the machine is on. Switch the machine to the "Steam Spray" by turning the knob down so that the steam can increase in temperature and pressure. If you are frothing milk, this is the stage for that.

6) When the steam is at full heat and pressure, turn the knob back to "Brew" and the espresso will flow out at a perfect temperature, including the "crema stage." Once the espresso exits the crema stage and starts to look "watery," turn the machine to the off position. You are done brewing espresso! (By anticipating the watery stage, you can cut the machine off early so that your creation doesn't become diluted.)

Clean Up: Unlock the basket and empty it into a garbage can while holding the black tab on the handle. If necessary, give it a quick rinse. Then, place it back into the machine.

Depressurize: To allow the rest of the steam to escape the chamber, turn the knob to the "Steam Spray" setting or "Brew" setting. I choose to use the Brew setting by placing the carafe under the spout and letting the hot water/steam exit. Once the red pressure button on the top of the machine releases, turn the machine off.

Some of the reviews for this product are a bit misleading. I've owned 3 of the Mr. Coffee Espresso machines, the Mr. Coffee ECM20 Steam Espresso Maker, Black, Mr. Coffee ECM250 4-Cup Espresso/Cappuccino Maker, and recently the Mr. Coffee ECM160 4-Cup Steam Espresso Machine, Black..and this one by Bella does just as good a job for the price it's at. The ECM160 reservoir finally got too clogged from scaling due to the water I was using. It's just my fault for not cleaning it often enough. Remember to keep up with that, people!

I too wanted a replacement, and as much as I wanted another Mr. Coffee machine, like Walmart's (Mr. Coffee BVMC-ECM260 Espresso 4 Cup Stainless Steel Black Target was the only one to have this in stock on it's shelves.

Here's what I've experienced so far in the past couple weeks:

* The water heats up just fine, in fact I think it's a bit hotter than I've gotten from the other models

* The coffee scoop/wrench that comes with the machine also has a tamper incorporated at the end of the handle, which is a nice addition. Though the scoop portion is a bit oversize for pouring coffee into the brew basket.

* There's a pressure button that pops up on the reservoir lid when the machine is on, which is informative. But if you've owned an espresso machine before, you probably already check to see if there's pressure still in your machine before opening the lid by turning the brewing knob.

* The steam wand cover does what it's supposed to, to keep milk from bubbling up and drying on the metal parts of the wand. There is a hole towards the top of the plastic wand that I refer to as the "snorkle". It's there to keep air flowing thru the wand. So if you bury the steam wand to the point the milk froth is being sucked into it, you're not frothing your milk correctly. Keep that hole clear.

* I miss the flat platform that the Mr. Coffee machines have in their design now. It was a nice way to keep my spoon and scoop organized. Bella's has a flat area on top, but it's just big enough to lay the coffee scoop over.

The only really problem I had with the machine, is trying to clean it for it's first time use. I followed the directions in the manual to brew 2 carafes of water before I start making my coffee. It had that usual plastic-heated smell I've had from the Mr. Coffee machines before when I was brewing it clean. Even turned on the steam wand to blow out any junk in there into a cup of water, which after 10-15 seconds, the water became slightly cloudy each time.

Which I figured that got it cleaned. Apparently I was wrong. When I started brewing my first cup, I could still smell the plastic-heated odor. It covered up the smell of the coffee it was still so strong. Made the first couple cups taste funny, so I tossed them. But the smell wasn't as strong the more brewed. So on the 3rd brewed cup, now into the 5th use of the machine, there wasn't as strong a smell and the coffee tasted fine. I don't remember how many cups my Mr. Coffee machines took to get them cleaned of that same "smell", but I suspect it was about the same. So really the directions don't really help on cleaning your machine for first time use. So if you're thinking about getting this machine, or any like it that's just as cheap, I would suggest you brew 5 carafes of water. Or do what the manual says, brew 2 carafes, then a carafe of vinegar like you're descaling it so that the acids will break down whatever junk is sticking inside the machine. It might be too much hassle for most people to deal with though.

I bought this for about $40 on black friday and it works well enough for me. I like espresso but I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a machine. This is simple to operate and requires very little maintenance. The only cons I have are (1)the "lock" thing that holds the espresso cup in the handle is worthless and breaks off when you're trying to throw out the grounds and (2)it feels cheap and sometimes it takes 5+min to brew my espresso.

It's good enough for me for $40 but I wouldn't pay $70 for it!

I've been making mochas, machiattos, and lattes for a while now using the reliable old fashioned Bialetti stove top perculator espresso makers and this is my first electric espresso maker purchase

I just came home from buying this from Target. It's on sale on a "temporary price cut" for $29.99

Brewed two carafes of water (no coffee) to clean the machine, per instructions. I went on to brew the first two espresso cups on it including frothed milk.

Perfect two shot cappuccino with warm, steamed, well frothed milk! Damn, 30 bux for a machine that makes a good cappuccino!

The internal parts seem to be metal eventhough the outside is plastic so that's a good sign.

I swear I'm excited and happy about this purchase!

It's so easy with this machine that a nutless monkey could make great mochas, cappuccinos, and lattes with it.
