Over the years, I've had to replace the glass carafe that came with my Krups espresso maker several times. I was thrilled when I found this generic carafe because it's made of heavier glass and costs about half as much. Now if someone would only come out with a replacement lid! (Krups lids are just as flimsy as their carafes -the tabs that are supposed to hold the lid to the carafe snap off with the slightest touch.)

Bottom line -if you need to replace your Krups carafe, get this Medelco one instead and save up for a better machine.

Thanks to the "Better than original" review and others. I agree with the reviewer: "thicker and heavier than the original, and half price of the other". No lid is included, so I reuse the lid, which I have. The lids fits the carafes fine. I have two lids and two carafes: one lightly tight, and one lightly loose. The lid forces coffee to going directly to the carafe (no coffee splashing).

I ordered two carafes because shipping is almost as much as the cost of one carafe; shipping cost of two carafes is the same as one carafe's. The glass looks clear, high quality, and better than Amazon's picture. Amazon's picture shows some greenish of the glass (low quality glass). Shipping speed is fairly good.

Here is my two cents. After washing, I put the carafe on a paper towel and in my coffee maker (reducing the risk of hitting something hard), not together with dishes anymore. I avoid to put the carafe near by anything hard (i.e. dishes, other mugs, cups, etc.). In ten years, my wife broke two carafes; I broke one.

Having broken the carafe to my espresso machine, natch, I endured for a long time with a makeshift pitcher. I finally got tired of having to estimate the water amount and decided to treat myself to a replacement. It's nice to have the lines on the side again; I feel more legit making my espresso now.

I deduct one star for cost. While it is not as expensive as other replacements, I ask myself why it costs as much as it does. It's not precision equipment, it's a freakin' carafe. Oh well. It certainly measures up to what it should be, there are no defects, and I can't find one for cheaper. I suspect that if Ikea set their minds to the problem, they'd have their Swedish elves somehow churn them out for two bucks a pop. Maybe by the next time I break an espresso carafe, which I see in the near future...

Anyway, it's fine, but mine came with had a white handle! It's the seller's fault and not a fault of the product itself, but... since they're the main seller for this product on Amazon, I thought it was worth noting in my review. It really wasn't a big enough deal for me to actually do anything about it, though.

Also, it didn't come with a lid, which my old one had. Is that normal? Is it just me? Again, I'm just happy to have it when I know I could really just be using a coffee mug.

It wasn't broken, either, but I have never had anything come broken that I've ordered on Amazon.

Even the lid from my old carafe fits this one. Handle of this carafe is smaller than the old one. Nevertheless, cannot complain for the price and free shipping with Amazon prime.

I do not understand what has happened in the coffee maker industry. It seems as if every coffee appliance I buy fails. This one is no exception. I bought this one only because most of the reviews praised it. Now I am sure that the reviews are phony and must be posted by the manufacturer. There is no control over the time of percolation which for whatever reason has been designed to be too short. The coffee comes out weak especially if you try to make less than 12 cups, the water just doesn't make it through the strainer for less cups??? The manual suggests using 20 spoons for 12 cups of strong coffee. At this rate I will essentially be using double the coffee grinds to make the same amount of coffee as I did with a much older Faberware I had and the coffee is still weak. The new faberwares are just as bad as everything else manufactured these days. The reviews and the item description also touts that this coffee percolator has a glass knob. This is an outright lie, it is plastic!!!! I was initially pleased with the design although I feel it is made with a lighter guage metal than it should be. I would gladly pay double for this product if it worked. Don't buy it, it is another coffee maker dud!!!!!

I had written a glowing review for the PRC-12 Percolator because it produced a great cup of coffee and heavenly aroma. Now, months later, this product resides in a local landfill and I won't buy another Cusinart product ever again.

It made great coffee right up to the day I found coffee all over the counter. The leak was tracked to the plastic bulb which broke off when I gave it a gentle twist. I contacted Cusinart Customer Service, emailed a copy of my Amazon receipt and was told they would be happy to provide a replacement lid w/bulb as soon as I could give them the serial number which I was told is on a sticker underneath the pot. Naturally, on my unit, the serial number sticker was missing. What was worse, when looking for the serial number, I found that the base had cracked and warped from the heat of brewing coffee. One more call to Cusinart Customer Service and they once again told me they would be happy to provide a replacement as soon as I provided the serial number which in this case was non-existant. Without that precious serial number Cusinart wouldn't lift a finger to help. The Amazon receipt was a worthless piece of paper when it came to dealing with Cusinart.

Due to poor Customer service at Custinart, I've decided to continue to buy from Amazon but I will no longer buy any Cusinart products.

Here's my take on the whole coffee thing. If you are a coffee guru, then you are going to go through all the trouble it seems to take to make the perfect cup, and this review is a mute point, or you are going to go to Starbucks and pay for the perfect cup. Most people who make coffee at home and in the morning (time permitting) are like me.

Here's my ideal coffee scenario:

I believe that buying my favorite high quality whole beans (Kenya AA), grinding them myself (coarsely, so they don't fall through the metal filter), and using the method I believe is best (the nostalgic percolator), is the perfect way to brew. It's my own preference: 1/3 nostalgia, 1/3 good beans, 1/3 convenience. They say that percolating coffee is burning beans. I and many other would disagree. I wake up grind my beans fill them and some cold tap water into the percolator. I wait 10 minutes while listening to that wonderful sound and smelling that great aroma!!! PERFECT!

For the GURUS, this may seem like heresy, but for me its the best of all worlds.

This model has, so far been great, 4 stars. The "glass knob" is plastic, whatever! Liars!. I've been brewing at the 6 cup line (water and beans) for 5 months at 4 to 5 times a week. Still hot and still consistent. It brews the same every time. This consistency over time is what I think will make or break this product. If it cools down a bit I will clean it. If it gets worse then I will be less than satisfied. If it fails before five years then I will be less than satisfied. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to make MY AMOUNT of coffee and how black I like it. I cannot set the heat or the brew time (it's all automatic), but the coffee comes out very hot (not burned) and very dark. The only thing I can control is the amount of both water and coffee. I have learned what amounts I like. Other times may vary because of the amount of water and coffee used.

Don't go by what the instructions say go by what is best for you. The amount of coffee you get and the amount it says is one cup WILL BE DIFFERENT. Who cares. Make it the way you like it. This will take time to learn, but it will be best in the end. Every brand percolator is different, to bad you can't have a trial test before buying.

Sometimes I like to go back and read my old reviews. To get a sense of things, and see to see if I still feel the same way about the purchases I've made. Or if the purchase turned out to be a lemon. Or just add something I missed or found new and interesting. Or edit a mistake. Whatever.

A lot of people are giving this perco. a low rating. By the way, mine still works perfectly fine after 2+ years. Still **** (Stupid plastic knob!).

You are cleaning it after every use, aren't you? If you don't like cleaning it, it will eventually go bad sooner than you think. So go back to a plastic drip machine if 100% convenience is what you want.

You are unplugging it after all of the coffee has been poured, aren't you? If you don't it will probably mess up the heating element. That's my guess.

I've noticed that when I first started using it, I would miss-align the spout tube with the heating dome located on the base. I've done this occasionally. All I got was hot, brown water. So make sure you align the spout tube properly.

I'm starting to not like the curved black base. Because, when I fill it up with water from the tap I sometimes bang it on the sink. It feels like I'm gonna knock it off if I'm not careful.

It still brews fine, maybe a little cooler then at first; but its still H. O. T. HOT.

I've noticed that darker brews (french roasts) give the best results, although bean-quality is probably more important than roast.

KEEP IT CLEAN BY WIPING IT OUT AFTER EVERY USE USING DRY PAPER TOWELS!!! IT WILL LAST FOREVER.

I bought this to replace my ancient aluminum stovetop percolator, which did make great tasting coffee but the aluminum/alzeimer concerns worried me, plus the thing was stained and almost burnt through from heavy use. Anyway, I did a fair amount of research and this Cuisinart seemed like the best electric percolator available. I thought an electric would be easier to clean (they aren't). The main point I didn't consider is that you can't control the percolating time on these things. That's pretty much the whole point of percolating coffee; If you want stronger coffee you want to be able to percolate it for a longer time. An electric percolator shuts off automatically after it's short pre-timed brewing cycle. I tried a variety of beans and ground settings (and added more coffee to the basket to compensate), but it was still weak. The end result here is watery coffee, just slightly better then what you get from a drip machine. What's the point? I will admit that this percolator is well designed, pours nicely, has a heavy gauge basket and keeps the coffee very hot. That classic percolated taste just isn't there. If you love the rich taste of percolated coffee like I do (it's the best!), you really need a stove top model. I'm getting a Bialetti!

Our office recently (and possibly misguidedly) voted a Starbucks machine off the island and replaced it with a couple of Bunn airpot makers. They're great for commercial coffee but that is also the problem: it tastes like mediocre diner coffee even when good beans are used. So I've taken matters into my own hands and picked up an Espressione Cafe Novecento espresso maker and have put it in the kitchen "on loan" to the company.

My first few attempts at pulling a decent shot with fresh ground coffee convinced me that I simply don't have the patience to learn the proper technique so, as the machine came with a pod portafilter, I decided to give that a shot (so to speak). Illy had the highest number of positive recomendations so I settled on them for my initial foray.

Simply put, I am impressed. The flavor is excellent, the output takes in the ballpark of 20-30 seconds a shot and has very good crema on about three out of every four shots. It can be tricky to properly seat the pod in the portafilter but moistening the pod first does help and that's a more a reflection on the filter design than the pod's.

The primary reason I can't give five stars (although I'd do four and a half if I could) is that even the Amazon price works out to almost a dollar a shot so my double Americano in the morning is only slightly less than I'd pay my favorite barista. And she has a really cute smile.

All in all, though, a very positive experience and I recommend the Illy pods.

Illy Dark Roast Pods provide a great-tasting cup of espresso with crema and without the mess of cleaning up all those grounds. The tin packaging is compact for easy storage, but I recommend keeping the opened pods in a vacuum container to maintain freshness. If you're willing to invest in two 18-pod tins, you can't beat the price on Amazon!

For a slightly different great taste and individual packaging to maintain freshness, try Espressione as an alternative, though the individual packaging requires additional storage space in your cupboard.

I am disappointed. They work as advertised: quick, clean, and easy. However, more important to me is taste.

While individually wrapped, the freshness of beans ground just for that moment is missing. The pod itself uses less coffee than I would in a single shot. Since I more often will make lungos, the sheer lack of coffee volume produces a weaker drink. Instead of pulling twice as long, I pull it 80% as long for a short shot, but it takes longer to get it all into the cup.

The crema is impressive, equal to any regular Illy.

The cost-per-drink is poor. I already knew this, but hoped I would be impressed enough by the quality so as to tolerate the price.

I regular buy cans of illy's dark roast whole beans for grinding into espresso. These ESEs are not as good as the real thing. Because of the high standard illy otherwise supports for its products, I cannot give my full support to the illy Caffe Scura Coffee, Espresso, (Dark Roast, Black Band), 18-Count E.S.E. Pods.

I'm pretty particular about my expresso and I much prefer fresh ground to the pods. But fresh ground is messy and takes more time. I have tried a bunch of different pods on the market. These are by far the best I've had. They give a rich bold flavor that's still smooth and enjoyable. Compared to the Starbucks pods these are one star above at least. They are a bit more expensive, but after going back and forth between these, the starbucks ones, and a few other brands the price difference per pod is usually no more the $0.20. In my opinion it is well worth the extra $0.20 for a delicious cup of expresso. Often better even then what I get at various coffee shops. If your an every day espresso/latte/cappuccino drinker then you will appreciate the subtle yet noticeable higher quality of these pods.

People used to the usual american burnt espresso (AKA starbucks) need to taste illy's coffee. Also, the POD system works well to deliver consistency for those less inclined to fuss over their own grind-and-tamp. The consistent quality of the espresso is high and together with the convenience, it's a winner for all but the snootiest (for whom, nothing but their own "recipe" will have been satisfactory anyway).

Let me first start by saying that I hesitate to call this device by its full name as this is much more than a traditional coffee maker! Honestly though, to most the Tassimo Single Serve Units are no different that the numerous Keurig models on the market; I mean, after all, it is pretty much just the same type of device right?? Well, there's several differences in the product that clearly defines the system.

STYLE

For styling the Tassimo T45 isn't very different than most of the other Single Cup Brewing Stations on the Market and this likely won't win any awards for looks but it isn't so hideous that you don't want it in your kitchen either.

OPERATION

Brewing is as simple as Filling the Water tank, lifting the lever and installing a coffee pack, placing a cup on the stand and pushing brew and if desired tweaking the brew by pushing the brewing button within 20 seconds of brewing completion. Of course multiple packs might be used if you're wanting to make more complex drinks.

SEPARATION

So the Tassimo has okay styling, simple operation and the pros certainly outweigh the cons but what really separates it from Keurig and prevents it from being an Also Ran in the Single Cup Brewing Market?

Well, there are a few things that separate it:

First, are the bar coded coffee packets that tell the machine how to brew the product and this allows the manufacturer to give you the perfect brew right in your own home!

Second, when brewing Cappuccinos or Lattes the unit will use a multiple Cartridge approach like the Keurig but the Tassimo uses real Milk, not some powdered confection, and the bar code allows for the perfect frothing based on the beverage being served.

The Tassimo is able to achieve these things by using a Hot Water on Demand System to alter the brewing temperature on the fly and the Barcode allows the coffee company to tell the brewer the exact temp the Coffee should be and exactly how much water should be used for their product. On top of this, the system uses a pressurized brewing system to control the time it takes to brew and this process actually emulates a French Press.

Of course, some manufacturers brew on the stronger side because the Tassimo allows you to soften the brew but there's no control for the user, to make the brew stronger and fortunately, the Tassimo single button allows for this to be done.

CONCLUSION

When we set out to purchase a SIngle Cup Brewing Station we basically had to choose between he Keurig and the Tassimo but ultimately the Tassimo won out for us as the final brewing process allowed more control to both the manufacturers of the Brewing Cartridges and it allowed us to tweak the brew strength to our liking. For some, the limited variety of Cartridges might make the system a bad choice but for others, like myself, it is okay if the quality of the product is high and the price per beverage is reasonably priced.

Overall, though, the product is very good quality all around and it is really hard to go wrong with this system but I'm only giving it 4 stars until more coffee houses get on board.

OUT OF BOX EXPERIENCE

The brewer was well packaged and a pleasure to open up. The manufacturer clearly took the unboxing experience into consideration, and put some thought into it -not on par with Apple for example, but certainly more thought than I'm used to seeing from small appliance manufacturers.

CRAFTSMANSHIP, FIT & FINISH and MATERIALS

That fabled German engineering is clearly in evidence here. I can personally say BOSCH also makes some amazing large appliances (their dishwashers are fantastic), but they aren't widely known here in the states. Materials selection is great. Nice sturdy plastics, and attractive finishes that also feel pleasant to the touch. The water tank is probably the least 'premium' feeling part of the brewer, but there aren't any moving parts and barring a drop out a second story window, I don't think it will be a source of trouble.

The brewer has sufficient heft that I can tell the internals are manufactured with some substance, and it doesn't have that "disposable" feel that so many small electrics have these days. That being said, it's not so heavy that its difficult to lift or move. Closing the lid of the brewing mechanism after inserting a t-disc provides a satisfying amount of resistance and finishes with great tactile feedback once the t-disc is locked properly in place and the brewing chamber is sealed.

USING THE DEVICE

The small but adequate LCD screen makes using the product all but foolproof. It tells you when to put in the disc, when to wait, and when to remove the disc. You also get an opportunity to hold the start button to dispense more beverage (if for example you wanted your beverage more dilute, or wanted to top off your mug).

Additionally, it lets you know when the water tank is running low or when cleaning is recommended. The included optional water filter is a welcome feature for me as we have god-awful water here, however I think the suggested replacement interval is a bit excessive. I replace it roughly quarterly with good results.

DEEP BREWED FLAVOR

I have tried just about every flavor and variety of t-disc offered in the states and have even purchased some varieties only available in europe from online foreign grocery shops. I am not a coffee connoisseur, but I know the difference between 'blech!' and 'yum!'. All of the coffee varieties I have tasted have been good to great, and most coffee drinkers should have no problem finding a variety that suits their individual tastes. The teas are wonderful, as is the Milka brand hot chocolate -try dropping a marshmallow or two in your mug and then brewing the hot chocolate on top -truly a treat. Personally, my favorite is the Chai Latte -I made the mistake of getting my friends and neighbors hooked on it as well.

The fact that the brewer reads the barcodes on the t-discs and 'knows' what it's brewing is really cool. This is how it automatically adjusts water volume, temperature, and pressure as well as brew time and frothing, which it appears to do by expelling steam. This seems far more advanced than other pod/capsule type brewers, which are more or less oblivious to the type of drink they are preparing.

I have no trouble finding the t-discs at Bed Bath & Beyond, or here at Amazon, and make a habit of buying in bulk for conveniences sake. Just recently I have also noticed the t-discs beginning to appear (albeit with a somewhat limited selection) at my local grocery and at Target.

JUST LIKE IN THE PICTURES

I highly recommend purchasing clear glass mugs/drink-ware, as some of the specialty drinks are truly beautiful with their frothy tops and wonderful color gradients that absolutely beg to be shown off. The drinks you make at home actually turn out looking like the ones in the product pictures, which surprisingly are not merely 'serving suggestions' as they say in food packaging parlance.

First let me say; I did not want this machine. My wife bought it because she finds culinary arts, (like boiling water,) difficult... especially in the A.M. I'm too cheap to pay this much for a coffee machine and the expensive individual pods. Further, I am ethically opposed to all the packaging waste the pods create.

So I was no fan of this system... until I had it for the last two years.

Now, we find it indispensable. It sees use two or three times every morning, one or two times in the afternoon and more on the weekend if we have guests. Other than routine cleaning, we have had no problems with it.

A note about the "piercing problem" other reviewers mention...

As befitting of my manly wont, I started using this thing without reading instructions. It is a tribute to Bosch engineers that I was able to get away with that for so long. However, I too noticed an occasional glitch where the grounds would spill and spray all over... which challenged my male tool-using prowess. Then I learned that you should be gentle and not slam down the lid. It would be an understatement to say, "I'm not very coordinated in the morning." If we share the kitchen during early hours, my daughter calls me "Big Foot." (It's not MY fault she doesn't wear shoes before 9AM!)

As my wife later learned, you can't put the pod in crooked or upside down and expect happy results. Sometimes, when she is not yet fully awake, she does stuff like that: puts the pods in upside down, puts shoes in the freezer or puts her Blackberry in the toaster. It's hard to answer a pop-tart.

(Really... I 'm not kidding. TWICE! We got a thick protective pad for it and attached her keys to it so it won't fit in the toaster anymore. The jingling-keys usually alert her before it's too late. BTW, our Cuisinart toaster still works and so does the Blackberry!)

So if we put the pod in correctly and don't hammer the lid down, we have ZERO problems. If this machine can withstand both a Somnambulistic Sasquatch and the Terrible Telecom Toaster, it must be robust!

(minimum 4 cycles per day, 365 days X 2 years, plus weekend guests... I estimate that is over 3,000 cups o' Joe!)

Maintenance...

You have to wipe down the laser-window once a month or so. That takes two or three seconds. (a moist tissue works better than a paper towel)

Routine internal cleaning is easy with the (supplied) cleaning disc. (Put disc in, press button. Repeat.)

If your water is funky, you will have to run a few more cleanings cycles or use a special cleaning agent they sell. We bought another Tassimo for our daughter in law who has city water; that's how I know. (Hers has also has worked perfectly for over a year now, and SHE makes those sticky sugary drinks with it.) Frankly, I haven't noticed any great improvement with the cleaning agent, so we just use good water for the cleaning cycle. With our home water purifier, we've had no problems and the beverages consistently taste great. (I'm having Yuban this morning)

Joan Jet should write another hit: "I hate myself for loving this machine" but it really has made good coffee and GREAT espresso for over two years. It's SO convenient! I might go to hell for the egregious extra landfill all the pod-packaging makes, but I will be wide awake when I get there.

I purchased the T45 Tassimo several months ago. It consistently left 1/2 the milk, and on top of that ..milk spilled all over the machine! All I wanted was a nice cup of chai tea. Finally I returned the T45 model and decided to go one step up to the T65 model. That was the best decision! First of all the piercing for the pod was upgraded, and I am thrilled with the results. Apparently TASSIMO has received many complaints.

There was not one milk spillage...and lots of other perks!! It was so worth tbe extra $40.00!!

I really think a lot of the reviewers are two harsh on rating this system. I use to use Keurig and I really think this is the best best system for the money. The thing I did not like about the Keurig was that I could not find strong enough coffees, ie espresso. If you want a quick good express or cappuccino this is probably about the best you will find for the money. I also feel that Tassimo overall has much better coffee than its competitors, especially if you like bold coffee. Yes, as some reviews have stated periodically the pods do fail, but since the recall a few months ago I have not had any issues. Is the system perfect no, but I am going to give the system 5 stars because I think it is by far the best thing on the market for making good coffee quickly.

Also if you like cappuccinos, I recommend spending around $15 get a hand frother. It will take an extra minute (if that) to nuke and froth the milk, but I think it makes a huge difference.

I have a Breville juicer and saw this Single Cup Brewer refurbished. For the price and value it couldn't be better. Arrived perfectly packaged with manual, etc. Easy to follow instructions and a great cup of coffee. Only thing missing was the sample pack of pods. It is an amazing value and obviously brand new in appearance although it is remanufactured. Save yourselves $100+ and get this one no regrets!

This is a great buy. It is over 100.00 cheaper than a new one. Comes in the original box , looks like new. Works great. Very happy with this purchase.

This is the best K-Cup brewer on the market. The water filter does a great job and the water warm time is almost instantaneous. It also fits in well with Stainless Steel appliances because it is actually stainless steel. This is in stark contrast to other brands like the Cuisinart model that has a simulated stainless look (painted plastic), which just looks cheap, I always have liked Cuisinart products until I compared it to the Breville. I have purchased two of these one for me and one for my parents; both get used daily and have been going strong for about 2 years now.

I was hesitant to get this. Anytime I ever bought an item refurbished, I always had a problem with it. (T.V.'s, DVD players etc..) I only have this Breville for 2 days. I owned at least 4 Keurigs. I always loved them. Only had a problem 1X and Keurig gladly replaced it free of charge. (after 6 months of use) I got another "Special Edition" Keurig a few days ago. It kept leaking under the base. I did not want to deal with that, so I sent it back and got the Breville. I loved the reviews and I loved the way it looked. It has a nice expensive look to it and is not as bulky looking as my Keurig was. I wanted to try something different. This looks so nice on my counter. The set up was super easy. I started brewing a cup of coffee in less than 10 min. I like the features. 5 Different cup sizes, heat adjustment, a scoop and "my kcup" built into the unit, the chrome finish.

This came in the original box and was packaged as if it was brand new. I hope it continues to work for me. It does have a 90 days warranty on it. I don't expect it to last for years. I replace my coffee pot every 2 years or so. So far I am really impressed with it. There are many variety's of KCups to use with it. I prefer decaf and my husband drinks regular. Its so convienent.
