With just a few days before Christmas, I've been running around all day looking for Nespresso capsules to go with this gift my daughter requested (and I bought through Amazon). At this point, she'll get the Nespresso maker, but if the capsules are so inconvenient to find, I expect it will be returned. She used one when she was living in the UK last summer and loved it maybe the capsules are easier to find there. The frustrating thing for me is that I've found the Nespresso maker at a couple of stores today, they just don't sell the capsules unlike some competitors on the market.

Krups F054 Anticalc Lime Descaller Kit

Krups F054 Anticalc Lime Descaller KitI bought the descaller (is it really spelled that way?) for my ancient Krups Il Primo espresso machine. No instructions came in the box. It took forever to get any help from Krups and then the instructions were for much fancier machines.

So here's what I did:

Dissolve the packet in 500ml of water. I did half a packet because my machine could not hold all that much.

Pour a third of the mixture into the machine. Steam some of it and let the rest go through the coffee basket.

Do that again.

Then heat it up and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. And then expell the mixture.

I found "crud" in the basket. Next time I will check the basket after each round.

I then ran plain water through the machine several times. Maybe it wasn't necessary but it made me feel better.

Had a "dead" Krups expresso maker. Used this powder per the instructions and machine started percolating like new. If you have a sluggish or non-percolating machine, use it before going out to buy a new one.

I bought this for my Krups coffee maker. It doesn't come with instructions so I followed the instructions that a previous reviewer had written and it worked fine. I ran it through the cycle twice and then ran clean water through twice, and it did the job.

My neighbor was giving her Krups cappuccino maker to charity and I asked if I could have it. She said that it didn't work because the water no longer came out, and she had tried to clean it and nothing worked. She gave it to me and I ordered this product. I followed the directions for the coffee maker I found online and ran the cycle once with the descaller and three times after with just water. Now it works great. I haven't decided if I should tell my neighbor or not!

Bialetti Brikka 4 Cup Stove Top Espresso Maker With Free Illy Espresso Coffee

Bialetti Brikka 4 Cup Stove Top Espresso Maker With Free Illy Espresso CoffeeBut really FrenchPress almost produces just as good. If you do a fine grind and use a lot of coffee and stir real good.

But this machine probably performs better because it produces creama and uses a little FORCE.

I got it right by the 6th attempt. You gotta remember is:

1. use HIGH heat , my stove is 1-9, i put mine on 9. Don't listen to the reviews where it says medium heat.

That is y their coffee comes out with no creama and the valve doesnt POP!!!

2. Use Fine to Medium to course grind. Well anygrind works. U just gotta use HIGH heat.

3. It takes 3-4 minutes. BOOM (POP)!! it comes out with great FORCE. The valve should come up and act like it is gonna fly off.

It will NOT do that with low to medium heat.

i used Seagrafredo Intermezzo. I am gonna try Starbucks, illy, Beantrees, and Lavazza. I bet I will like it all!!!!

4. I filled my water barely past the water mark and got almost 7 ounces of espresso. On high heat NO water will be left in chamber. Remember HIGH HIGH HIGH HIGH HIGH HIGH heat!!!! HIGH heat!!!!

It makes coffee to the standard of the Bialetti Moka. I am disappointed with the crema that the special valve in the Brikka is supposed to make. It makes the crema but it dissappears very quickly. As you are pouring the coffee into your cup the crema disapates, so you just end up with plain black coffee. The Moka gives you plain black coffee for a lesser cost.

Farberware Classic Stainless Steel Yosemite 8-Cup Coffee Percolator

Farberware Classic Stainless Steel Yosemite 8-Cup Coffee PercolatorPerked coffee is old school, to be sure, but a well-made cup of percolated brew is robust and satisfying in a way that drip coffee isn't. Not only does the percolation process provide a deeper and fuller mouth, I think, but a percolator, bubbling away, is a lovely sight and sound.

If you don't like perked coffee, don't bother with any percolator. But if you are interested in something other than drip brew, consider this Farberware percolator. I'm not one to ooh and ahh over design, but this is a darned handsome piece of kitchen equipment. Take a look and the large picture and I will spare you the adjectives. :)

The stainless steel construction makes it sturdier and heftier than thin-metal percolators you might buy in the camping gear section of a chain store. While the name "Yosemite" evokes coffee bubbling over a campfire, I'd probably not use this on a wood fire to avoid blackening. I mean, this thing really is shiny and pretty. But as heavy-duty as it is, perhaps it would clean up well.

It's a capacious pot, making eight cups of coffee. The interior basket and rod are well made, fitting tightly together and clamping in place with the lock-down lid. It makes more coffee than my old electric percolator, but it does take up a burner on the stove-top.

Lastly, should you buy this unit, remember: Perked coffe may be good, but it's a danged sight hotter than drip brew. Of course, you'll probably figure that out for yourself...

I have never had a percolator before I bought this Farberware percolator. I have always had drip coffee makers, which were ok, but expensive and I was trying to get away from plastic in the kitchen. I read all the reviews here and decided at this price I couldn't really go wrong and I was right. The Yosemite percolator makes a very smooth cup of coffee.

A few things I have learned:

Coarser ground coffee leaves less residue in the pot.

I use a regular coffee filter and just poke a hole through the middle to stop any grounds from getting into the coffee.

I turn my burner on high until it starts percolating, then down to med-low for approximately 7 minutes.

I make sure my handle is not on top of the burner, but rather, just over the edge and it has never gotten hot. I have a smooth top range.

After the coffee is done brewing, I pour it into a stainless steel thermos to drink throughout the day.

I hand wash my percolator and have had no discoloration or scratching to the surface.

You really can't go wrong with this purchase and it is really pretty sitting on the stove, too. I bought another one for camping.

During Hurricane Isabel I had no electricity and was able to make great coffee on my gas stove with this percolator. I use it daily now.

I found a replacement for the plastic top at Fantes.com -part #11380, "Small Replacement Percolator Glass Top" for $1.99.

see:

If you wash it in the dishwasher, don't use the "heated dry" option as it will leave permanent water stains. Also, I found that this coffee is reheatable [once] and still tastes good, not muddy.

I bought the Farberware Classic Yosemite 8-Cup Stainless Steel Percolator after battling with several automatic-drip coffee makers. All I wanted was a hot cup of coffee! Now that I have given up on automatic-drip coffee makers and chosen to use a percolator, a relic from childhood, I enjoy a piping hot cup of coffee every day, as opposed to lukewarm brown water. This percolater is easy to use, cleanup is easy, my coffee tastes better, and the wonderful smell permeates my kitchen as it perks. Why automatic-drip coffee makers ever came to be is beyond me. Another example of the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Want Farberware Classic Stainless Steel Yosemite 8-Cup Coffee Percolator Discount?

This is my first percolator. I originally bought it as a spacesaver. I have virtually no counterspace in my kitchen and thought it could just stay on my stove, which it does nicely (and it looks nice!). Thankfully, it comes with instructions, for those people like me who have no idea how to brew coffee this way.

I am very impressed with the flavor of the coffee, previously having only made coffee from drip makers and I enjoy not having to bother with filters. A small amount of the ground does end up in the coffee, but it sinks and doesn't affect my enjoyment of it at all... just don't drink the very last bit :) Also the handle stays nice and cool like you'd hope, but you definitely have to be careful not to touch the pot itself. It will burn, as you'd expect any steel pot that just came off the stove to do.

Now, the reason it only got four stars is due to the top. The plastic top of mine is usable, but deformed and difficult to screw in and keep screwed in. I can only assume that this is because it melted slightly early on (I don't remember receiving it that way). It hasn't gotten any worse and I have been using it for at least a year. I don't consider this a deal breaker though, since replacement tops can be bought at any kitchen store for fairly cheap. The lid, as other reviewers have noted, requires a small amount of force to take off. This actually makes me comfortable. I'm not worried that the lid may come off while the coffee is brewing, but that's me. I've never had a problem trying to get it off, but I also don't take the lid off til I'm ready to clean it, so I've never had the experience of being burned because it is on too tight.

Overall I really enjoy this product. It's a great price and as far as I'm concerned, its only shortcoming is a plastic top that can easily be replaced.

Bialetti "Brikka" 4-cup (6 Oz) Stove Top Espresso Maker

Bialetti 'Brikka' 4-cup Stove Top Espresso MakerGreetings, I love this stove top espresso maker but there are some differences you may find of value.

1)The boiler where you put the water can only be filled about 25% compared to most at 70% which means a rather large unit in relation to the amount of espresso you can make.

2)Maintenance is more than others because this machine uses more pressure and there are more seals to replace when necessary. These are not readily available locally and you will probably have to have them shipped to you at an extra expense that may exceed your sense of reasonableness. Also..most of these types of machines come with extra seals. This unit doesn't come with any extra seals at all.

3)The picture looking through the window at the top of the machine seeing the nice crema is a farce. The only way to see the nice crema if you carefully follow the directions is to lift the lid up and wipe the condensation off of the inside that is always present that blocks your view.

4)Realize that this unit is made of Aluminum and some are concerned with the toxic effects of that if any gets into your Java that has high acidity content.

Plusus include -

1)Very nice and tasty espresso superior to other stove top machines.(no aluminum taste)

2)Really nice crema but only if yor coffee is of a fine grind #1, or #2 and the coffee needs to be freshly ground. If you buy pre-ground coffee packages at the market you will not be seeing any crema. I buy fresh coffee ground by the half pound at #1, or #2 fine grind and get really good results.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Cheers!

I have lots of friends with lots of different pump machines of varying price.... and not one of them beats the brikka for quality. It is not just another MOKA, which is not much better than percolated coffee. The BRIKKA makes better coffee than most cafes, if you get fresh beans and grind them properly. Tonnes of rich crema.

Buy Bialetti "Brikka" 4-cup (6 Oz) Stove Top Espresso Maker Now

Full review with pictures and video:

http://daigoexpressed.net/brikka

Wonder how Brikka makes crema? Actually, it's a simple and neat trick at the nodule of the upper chamber from where the coffee comes out. Brikka has a metallic valve on the nodule that keeps the coffee from coming out until the pressure of the coffee from the bottom chamber becomes string enough to push up the valve.

Once the valve opens, the coffee comes out with a strong pressure going through the narrow exit of the nodule. This makes the similar effect of the espresso machine, and thus foams the crema.

How does it taste? It's by far superior than moka pot, or cheap espresso machine when you carefully follow the instruction that comes with Brikka. The crema is very smooth, and the coffee has the characteristic of espresso.

The instruction includes the careful measurement of water, strength of the stove flame, and shaking down the new Brikka for the first use. The crema is such a delicate matter, and you also have to be careful when you pour the coffee into the cup. All these things may sound too much work, but actually it's not bad at all after you get use to it. Washing Brikka may be more pain than the all in one espresso maker, but I cannot complain when given this good production of coffee, and brewing a good coffee in a traditional way is always fun.

The pot is made with aluminum. I saw some reviews that complained that it is not made from stainless steel, but I also heard most of the Italian makers say aluminum pots make better coffee, and I believe it is because of its high conductivity. This review is based on two-cup.

I just wanted to alert potential Brikka buyers that there may be several batches of defective Brikkas floating around on the market. So far I've gone through three of them and all three were defective -very poorly machined, sharp jagged edges, gaskets that don't fit, loose safety valves, flakes of metal floating in the brewed coffee (not good!), etc. Maybe I'll try again at some point in the future once the defective batches have disappeared. Hopefully Bialetti's quality control will improve by then.

On the bright side, Amazon makes it very easy to return defective merchandise. Kudos for that.

Great way to make delicious strong coffee. I would not say it is really true espresso, but has many of the qualities. just doesn't quite come up to the quality of espresso I've had in cafes of Italy or Australia, but you can't expect as much without investing many hundreds of dollars in a quality espresso maker AND a quality grinder. The Brikka is great for making good "espresso" at home without a huge investment, and it is better than many espressos I've had at the coffee shops in the US.

Realize that the "Brikka" is the only Bialetti model that has the patented pressure regulator at the top that allows it to build up pressure before suddenly forcing all the steam through to the top chamber. This added pressure is what allows it to produces the froth that approaches a true espresso crema.

Some tips:

I find that grinding just a smidge more than a quarter cup of beans yields just about the right amount of grounds for the Brikka 4-cup. Do not tamp or even tap the espresso grounds to get more in, but do fill it level to the very top. Also use freshly roasted beans. By following these rules I seem to get more of the so-called crema in my cup.

Use a consistent setting on your stove and set a timer. After some practice you'll know just how long before the top suddenly fills with the frothy coffee about three minutes and forty-five seconds for my stove on medium flame. Sometimes I have to give the pressure regulator on top a little flick to get the coffee flowing at just that perfect time. Take it off the heat immediately when the loud hiss starts (it comes after the soft hiss that mostly fills the pot). Pour it into your cup right away, I even do it while it is still finishing filling the top chamber with that loud hissing. That keeps the coffee from acquiring a burnt taste. Being this fastidious means you have to stay nearby and watch the time, but results in a good cup. You also need to stay nearby because if you leave it on the heat after the top chamber is filled you'll ruin the seal between the top and bottom sections (these can be purchased separately). Don't wash the Brikka with soap, but rinse and dry with a towel immediately after every use. This should keep the regulator working well on the inside (so I've heard) and keeps it shiny and new looking on the outside. All said a bit of a fuss for making good coffee, but well worth it.

Don't know why it is called 4 cup; I guess they are talking about those tiny demitasse cups which are probably equivalent to a single shot at Starbucks. In fact it makes exactly 6.7 fluid ounces; a bit less than a standard measuring cup. It's a perfect amount for a single serving for me, but maybe others would find that to be too much for a single serving.

Urnex Full Circle Biodegradable Coffee and Espresso Equipment Descaling Powder

Urnex Full Circle Biodegradable Coffee and Espresso Equipment Descaling PowderI have to admit that we don't keep up on cleaning our coffee machine but after using this product, all of the residue and "stains" disappeared! Coffee definitely tastes fresh.

Simpler to use than vinegar with no detectable aftertaste. I can't speak to its effectiveness with any authority—I haven't disassembled my coffee maker and tested the components—but I have not noticed any evidence that it does not clean thoroughly as advertised.

I clean the coffee maker at work (although not nearly enough)as we have very hard water. Even alternating from tap to bottled water leaves a residue in the water reservoir and any parts that the water must go through. I tried this product and the reservoir tank and all the components that water must go through-is sparkly clean! That would be enough for me but the coffee even tastes "smoother" I may actually clean the coffee maker more regularly now that I see how clean it can be and the improved flavor in the grinds!Another bonus-no vinegar smell!

The package on these and my old ones show a cup of coffee. The new ones I just received show a pot. Had read a previous review warning of same, but since photo shows cup I fig'd all was ok. Does not seem the same strength as before??? Did not help much, went from 30 minutes brewing to about 23. I have since on Capresso's advice tried Durgol and cut my brew time down to 15 minutes just like when coffee maker was new. This is the best stuff that I've ever used to clean a coffeemaker! I was introduced to it when I received a free sample with the purchase of our coffeemaker, and after trying it, I was sold. I've been ordering and using this product for the past 2-3 years.

I will caution you to be sure to buy the product as pictured. Either the company has reformulated and repackaged these, or there is a counterfeit version out there, but the latest purchase I made (which has a picture of a coffeepot on the front rather than a coffee cup) does not seem to work as well. I sometimes have to repeat the process twice (using twice as much product) to get the same effect that I did before.

Capresso 10-Cup Coffee/Cappuccino Makers

Capresso 10-Cup Coffee/Cappuccino Maker, BlackAfter spending a few weeks researching various coffee makers and reading numerous reviews and online user reports, I settled on the Capresso CoffeeTEC due to its features and the theory behind how it brews coffee reduced aeration to hold flavor (vacuum sealed carafe), no burner to bake the bean and increase acidity, and 190+ degree water dispensed into the brewing basket, which is very hot for a coffee maker!

I have to admit, I was nervous. I saw two general complaints that were common from online user reports. 1) The carafe did not maintain the water temperature, and 2) the frother ceased to work. A few comments on these:

Thermal carafe: I have no clue how anyone can be having a problem with this carafe, unless there's a problem with the heat of the water entering the carafe or in how they're storing the coffee after it brews (like, in the refrigerator, perhaps).

I did some tests on the carafe after getting my CoffeeTEC. The carafe was at room temperature (not pre-heated, as some suggest) when doing this test. Immediately after brewing straight water with the carafe in the closed position, I measured the water temperature at 189.3f using a digital thermometer. I closed the carafe and let it sit for exactly one hour then measured the water at 182.1f, a drop of only about 7f, which is fantastic! Now, I also brewed a full pot of straight water on my now-replaced Mr. Coffee, which sat on a hot burner during the brew process. After brewing, the water temperature was exactly 178f. So, after one hour in the thermal carafe with no burner contact, the Capresso water was hotter than the Mr. Coffee immediately after brewing. Very impressive results!

Frothing problem: I have noticed that the plastic pieces that connect the milk container to the frother do have to be sealed properly for frothing to work. Also, it is necessary to clean the items after frothing; a very simple and quick process. Occasionally my unit will not froth immediately even though the steam would blast in an attempt to froth. This has been very easy to solve. After turning the steam on, I simply press the milk container tightly against the plastic piece that connects it to the frothing nipple. Don't worry if you don't understand this description. You have to own the unit to know the pieces I'm discussing. Just understand that with some minor manual jostling, the milk will flow and froth wonderfully!

Now, as for my assessment of this coffee maker... it is the best coffee maker I have ever owned! I'm knocked-out by the quality of brew I'm getting. Just as good if not better than commercial coffee houses, because I can make it to my specifications!

A few comments on this though... it took a few weeks for me to figure out exactly how to use this coffee maker so it brews to my liking. When I brewed my first cup, I didn't care for it. Keep in mind, this unit brews water quickly through the grind. It extracts flavor and aroma through heat, not prolonged water contact with the bean. As a result, you will have to use more coffee than most coffee makers.

As an example, I used to measure one rounded tablespoon of beans (pre-ground) for every two 5oz cups, then I'd add one extra tablespoon for added body. So, for 20oz of coffee, I'd use three tablespoons of beans. With this coffee maker, I've learned I need to use one tablespoon for each 5oz cup plus one extra for added body. So, for the same 20oz pot of coffee, I use five tablespoons of beans.

Also, the other detail I discovered is, it was necessary to grind the beans finer than I had before. I've started grinding the beans on the Espresso setting of my grinder rather than the automatic drip setting. This made a huge difference on the strength and flavor of the coffee.

So, keep in mind you'll want to play with the quantity and fineness of grind. If you use canned grinds, you have much less leeway. You'll just have to add much more grind, but be careful! Don't add too much or it will overflow the basket. Always adhere to the maximum grind amount Capresso recommends in the documentation.

The coffee maker comes with a gold filter. You may or may not like using the filter; I elected not to use it. The gold filter allows more oil and particulates into the coffee. Some like this; others don't. It makes for an oilier, cloudier brew. Using paper filters, more of the fine particles are filtered out and much of the oil is kept from leaching into the carafe. The coffee is cleaner, clearer and not murky. I prefer using paper, but the preference is highly individualistic. I'd suggest running some tests and decide for yourself.

In the end, I find the coffee to be superb! This coffee maker is a fine-tuned piece of equipment that responds to the subtlest of changes you impart on the brewing process. Change the fineness of the grind or the quantity of beans used and you'll experience a noticeable difference in the outcome of the brew. After I determined the right balance that suits my pallet, all I can say is, "Wow!" The flavor and body is nutty, winy and full, the aftertaste smooth and non-acidic, and the aroma outstanding! I highly recommend this coffee maker.

But, plan to make a number of pots when you first get it with the understanding that many of those pots will probably go down the drain. It'll take some test runs to determine the quantity of coffee you'll want to use, the fineness of grind, and which filter to use. With due diligence, you'll have a splendid coffee maker from which you'll enjoy each day's coffee for years to come, custom made specifically towards your taste.

So, read the other reviews for what they are and keep in mind some of my comments. In my experience, many of the complaints reflect a user who hasn't experimented with the grind quantity and fineness, and hasn't been adventurous enough to work the "piping" when frothing.

I've been impressed with the well-thought out products coming from this relatively small company in the small appliance industry. Their Swiss designers have the leading edge technology in coffee makers and the CoffeeTEC is the latest innovation. Coffee is brewed 10 cups in under 8 minutes, and that's fast. The idea is to have the fresh coffee exposed to hot water for the minimum amount of time, so flavor is extracted without extracting the bitter parts of coffee flavor. CoffeeTEC does this really well. A special 3-5 cup brewing selector makes it possible to brew a perfect small pot of coffee. The coffee goes directly into a stainless steel vacuum carafe, and after removing and sealing the pot the coffee stays hot for hours but never gets heated over and over again as in a traditional hot plate coffee maker. The Auto Cappuccino feature is a genuine plus for those of us who want some frothy milk with our coffee, it turns cold milk into hot milk and froth in seconds. Since all the works are outside of the coffee maker, it's easy to clean and to remove the milk container for refrigerator storage. This is a winner in the category of latest coffee technology.

This is the second review I have written for this product (Please see the review directly below this one by "bookdeep"). I am pleased to report that we now LOVE this machine, ever since we discovered the "trick," and I am writing again to try and rectify the embarrasingly harsh review that I sent before. As I said in the first review, the coffee machine works fine: it makes a great cup of coffee quickly and efficiently, and it is easy to clean. Initially, we had some difficulty with the frothing mechanism; however, the solution turned out to be very simple. In order to start the steaming/frothing mechanism, there is a large dial that must be turned one-quarter turn from "Twelve O'Clock" (Steam Off) to "Three O'Clock" (Steam On). We discovered that when you turn the dial to the Steam On position you have to bear down on the dial a tiny, tiny bit: maybe the dial would actually go to 3:01 on the clock face, maybe even less. When we do that, the frothing starts immediately, every time. It seems that our trouble was that we were a little too delicate turning the dial. Note that this "overturning" is very slight: we wouldn't want anyone to damage the machine. I wish that I could take back the previous review because that low rating will have an affect on the average for this product, but I cannot. I hope that writing to correct our error will help others who may consider this machine. Please note, that in spite of the brand name "Capresso" this is not an Espresso machine; it is a coffee maker with a frothing mechanism, which works amazingly well now that we know the trick. If this is the combination that you are looking for, then we cannot recommend this machine highly enough--it does do both of these jobs very well. And now that you know the trick, maybe there will be fewer frustrated, and more happy, coffee drinkers like us.

This is a fine, easy to use, machine that I'm really enjoying having in my kitchen. I had never used a milk-steamer before, and found the idea a little intimidating. But the process is really quite painless, and now I'm wondering why I did without it so long (even my java-phobic bride is enjoying homemade hot chocolate thanks to the steamer).

Anyone who enjoys having a pot of coffee on-call throughout a morning should avoid glass pots like a cliché and instead use a thermal carafe like this one. Not only does it keep coffee steaming hot without constant re-heating, but the wide top and easy-off lid make for easy clean up when you're done.

The coffeemaker is elegantly designed, seems relatively sturdy, and looks nice on a countertop. Plus, it's fast, fairly quiet, and -as I said -easy to clean.

For someone like me who just wants to enjoy coffee without trying to become a home barista ('professional maker of complex espresso drinks'), this is as much machine as I think I'll need ... at least until the one with the built-in burr grinder arrives.

It makes the best coffee I've ever had. The carafe works perfectly and keeps the coffee hot, and at nearly peak flavor, for hours. Those few reviewers who say that it doesn't keep the coffee hot simply have a carafe with a broken vaccuum seal.

I'm bothering to write a review because I had a problem with the machine, as some others have: the steamer stopped working properly, and the water tank was leaking. But at that point my experience was totally different from that of other posters who have complained about problems with the equipment and Capresso customer service. Get this: we had no warranty information on the machine, having received it 2nd-hand. Still, when my wife called their customer service, with no questions asked we were sent a pre-paid UPS label to return the unit. I put it in a UPS box on a Monday morning. On Wednesday afternoon---two days later---I received a new machine via UPS. (I know that they first received the machine I sent before sending the replacement because they replaced exactly what I sent, no more, no less; i.e., I sent the machine with just the water tank, none of the other parts, and I got back just a machine with a water tank.) I'm as pleasantly astonished by UPS getting it back and forth so quickly as am by Capresso simply and immediately fixing the problem at no charge.

Maybe Capresso "got the message" about customer service and made some changes. I could be bothered that the machine developed problems in the first place, but hey, things break. The bottom line for me is that it makes PERFECT coffee and, when there was a problem, Capresso took care of it astonishingly well.
