Aerolatte Cafe Porcellana Espresso

Aerolatte Cafe Porcellana Stove Top Espresso Maker, 4-Cup, RedThis Espresso Pot brought back memories of a smaller pot I used to have that my parents brought back from Italy for me many years ago.

Unfortunately I lost the pot in a divorce settlement and have been unable to find one or anything similar until now.

After reading the previous review I was a bit hesitant to try the Cafe Porcellana stove top espresso maker but between my nostalgia and the reputation of Aerolatte I purchased it.

To my surprise and excitement the Espresso Pot worked wonderfully.

I didn't find anything wrong with the construction of this item. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow, just fill the bottom vessel with water and fill the funnel shaped filter with coffee, Screw on the top portion and place on the stovetop. In minutes the espresso brews up from the bottom through the spout to the Porcelain pot.

What a wonderful cup of coffee it made, I was so excited I decided to make another pot and made a cup of cappuccino with the Aerolatte Hot, another purchase I made along with the Cafe Porcllana. Bravo Aerolatte!!Aerolatte Hot Milk Warmer and Frother

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago for a birthday present. It ended up being a joke. The black plastic on the spout was cut unevenly and the threading was basically non-existent. You could slide the spout loosely in and out. The paint was uneven and coming off around to top of the basin where you put water in to be heated, and there was black tar-like substance inside of the part where water goes; it left a greasy film even after being washed. The consensus was, "This does not appear to be food safe". I hope nobody else tries to make coffee with one of these. I cannot imagine selling such a thing. There should be a "from China, no quality control, use at your own risk", warning on the label, and on Amazon's seller page.

I love this little pot. I have been using it for about a month and it makes a great espresso quick and easy. I used to have something similar years ago and I was happy to find this one. I agree with the reviewer that said the instructions are easy to follow. I guess the other reviewer must have just gotten a bad one. Happens I guess. Mine is sturdy and well made. La Pavoni EPC-8 Europiccola 8-Cup Lever Style Espresso Machine, ChromeI bought one of these a couple of months ago and although it is a bit expensive it is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. It looks great. It is so well made, it feels like it will last forever as it is so simple, no electronics to break down no plastic bits to break off. You get a huge amount of control over the way the coffee tastes, it's all in the speed of lowering the handle and the tightness of grinds. It takes a few attempts to get it right but once you've worked it out you'll never look back.

My parents bought this about five years ago and I followed suit about a year ago. When she first bought it I thought they were crazy, but when it got there I understood why.

This machine is superb for almost any kind of coffee. Sometimes I like a strong espresso and sometimes I like a cold cafe sheccerato which is a cold coffee and is great. (To make it you simply get a shaker (like a martini shaker) and fill it with ice and a few teaspoons of sugar. Brew the coffee and while it is still very hot throw it in the shaker and shake it strongly for about a minute. The result is an ice cold frothy espresso, great for warm days forget Starbucks imitation stuff, this is much better).

As other people have said, it takes a little bit of time to get it right. Typically I've found that very thin grains are not the best to work with, something between your typical Illy coffee grain and the larger cheap grains usually works well. It take a bit to get used to, but once you start to get a hold of the whole concept it works superbly well. Frankly, even when you do a poor job the coffee is still good.

In addition, my parents have had this item for about five years and have not had a single problem. It's extremely easy to clean and if you are in a rush it's also a great machine since it loads so quickly and easily.

Also, if you are running out the door you need not wait for the water to completely heat up. You can run it after just a few minutes (of course your coffee won't be as warm, but it doesn't have to heat up completely in order to use it). For those quick out-the-door mornings, this is great. You won't have the best espresso in the world, but you'll still have one that beats just about anything.

I've been through about three [price range] machines in the last few years and they all broke or just didn't taste right. ... You have to be able to taste the difference between good and bad coffee to enjoy this machine. If you don't you probably won't enjoy this machine as much. In other words, if Folgers Instant coffee tastes good to you, move along.

It's also worth getting good coffee for this. ...

In the end, if you are looking for a high-quality product that makes high quality coffee, this is a great choice.

Manual machines, without question,produce the best cup of espresso. I have owned them in the past, and recently purchased a brand new La Pavoni. The machine arrived broken. I could not even get one cup of espresso. I called thinking that La Pavoni would have me send back the machine and replace it. WRONG. I was told that this was not allowed, and the only option I had was contact one of there US Service Agents and arrange to have the machine sent to them for repair. Even then they indicated that the repair expense would be my responsibility.

At this point what do you do? So either I keep the machine as a useless decoration, or concede and try to fix it.

I tried the three numbers they provided. About 10 days have gone by, and I have called each number numerous times to no avail. You never reach a real person. Only a tape recording informing you that they would contact you as quickly as possible.

So, yes, a manual machine is the best, but La Pavoni warranty and service is horrible. If you want a manual, try a different vendor.

You'd better know your coffee before you even start looking at this espresso maker. It is a manual pull espresso maker, meaning there is some art and a lot of trial/error incurred when making your coffee. That said, this has produced some of the best espresso I've ever had. It's a smaller maker, and is great for someone who just wants about 4-6 espresso shots before needing to refill. (I work out of home office, so this is perfect...)

PROS:

* Small, means it doesn't take up much counter space.

* Manual Lever If you want fill control over your coffee, this is the way to go.

* More than enough steam pressure/volume to steam 12oz+ of milk.

* Solid construction. It is mostly all metal.

* Comes up to heat FAST. (About 5min with a full tank.) The head also comes up to temp quickly.

* Visible water level

* Easy clean drip tray

* Easy screw-off levers, knobs, etc easily replaceable/customizable.

CONS:

* The base is lightweight, and could be more solid. It feels cheap compared to the solid construction of the boiler/head.

* The steam nozzle does not swivel out, causing you to have to steam your milk VERY close to the boiler. (Ouch!)

* Must wait for it to cool before refilling due to steam pressure.

* The default tamp that comes with this unit SUCKS. Too small for the basket..leads to bad coffee...why, Pavoni, why?

CAVEATS:

* Not a "push button, receive coffee" type of maker. This is a pro for me, but you should be well aware that this requires finesse and patience.

* Ensure you are comfortable with servicing it yourself or OK with mailing it to a service center. This is not a throwaway item after a few years, and can be a lifetime purchase.

MUST ALSO BUY:

* 51mm Tamp. Seriously. Don't even use the one that comes with the unit. It will ruin your pulls. 51mm is the correct size.

* DEEP milk frothing container. Because of the angle and stiffness of the steam arm, you WILL spray yourself in the face if you don't have a good angle on it, and something to catch the overspray. (I use my mug, and have given up on having fancy foam.)

* Nylon brush Coffee regularly gets stuck in the area between the head and steam curtain on this unit. Clean after every use.

* Insulated espresso mugs/shotglases On bigger units, you can sit what you use to catch the coffee in on the unit to warm it up. Not so here. I use glass shotglasses that I heat up with hot water prior. (I'm cheap, ok?)

* Conical burr grinder A consistent grind is very important for this maker, as it is the difference between great coffee and awful coffee. This unit is sensitive to the grind, so once you have the right grind, it is very helpful to have that dialed-in on your grinder for every grind thereafter.

Why I rated 4/5 instead of 5/5??? Because of the craptacular plastic tamp, the inflexible steam nozzle, and the flimsy seeming base. Don't get me wrong, I would have zero issues recommending this unit highly, I think they just could have gone that extra little bit.

I've enjoyed 3.5 years of incredible coffees with this thing, not to mention that it's beautiful and a conversation piece. Other than a single gasket overhaul and regular cleaning I didn't have maintenance issues But the design flaws have taken their toll. A year ago the base slowly started to rust because the steam wand tends to drip water under the tray (admittedly I could have been more diligent about mopping it up, but I shouldn't have to be).

Then this morning, the portafilter handle broke into pieces. Underneath the plastic handle grip, the metal of the handle had completely rusted through because, unbeknownst to me, moisture was getting in there as well.

Considering that the machine is now 33% more expensive than when I bought it, I say buyer beware. The portafilter is replaceable but hard to find. While I'm at it, I should also warn that the steam wand isn't going to give you enough steam for professional barista-quality froth, and that it gets a bit wonky to make multiple drinks in a row. I might add that I say all this with somewhat of a broken heart.

PS I had tried to change my rating to 3 stars but apparently because I had previously rated it I can't change my rating.

Nescafe Dolce Gusto Melody II Single Serve Coffee Machine, BlackMy husband and I received this as a gift. We are coffee drinkers, so this definately made our day. This coffee maker is very easy to use and easy to clean. The coffee is always piping hot. You can make a cup in about 30 seconds! I like being able to make different varieties of drinks that I couldn't do before. Instructions for making the different drinks are super easy. The coffee, hot chocolate, cappuccinos, and machiatos are all good. The cold drinks (ice cappuccino & peach tea) are wonderful. I would definatley recommend this to anyone. Before, we were ordering our pods online, but I've recently discovered that Walmart sells quite a few of the varieties.

I got this as a Christmas gift for my wife. So far we've only tried the latte macciato and the hot chocolate (cocochino) flavors but she likes both of them. The machine is easy enough to use, although an auto shut off option may be worth the extra money (the creativa model has this option). As it is you have to decide when to turn off the machine so you have that control over the strength of the coffee but its hard to get the reccommended amount. The only complaint I have is that amazon says:

"Everything you need to make a hot or cold drink is contained in our easy to use capsules, your new system come with a variety box of 16 capsules, a cappuccino cup and saucer, and a latte macchiato glass mug"

Which is partly true because I got the variety box but I didn't get the cappuccino cup, saucer or latte macciato glass mug. I didn't lower my rating since this has no effect on the coffee maker but I wouldn't have paid what I did if I knew I wouldn't be getting these items. I think its an error on Amazon's part and not a missing item because the box did not mention the cup, saucer or mug being included. I will update my review after I hear back from Amazon on the issue.

UPDATE: Amazon took care of the problem for me, hopefully they start shipping with the mugs for everyone else or they take it off the description.

After reading the rave reviews for this product, I decided to give it a try to save money and time in my morning routine of getting coffee drinks at starbucks, dunkin donuts, etc. A quick breakdown of the device from over a dozen uses of the machine:

Pros

-makes drinks fast

-easy to assemble

-aesthetically pleasing (good-looking)

-compact, occupies minimal space

Cons

-drinks are watery

-drinks require multiple capsules

-drinks don't have full flavor

While ergonomically, this device is quite a success, it lacks the full flavor of a coffee from a true cafe or even a Starbucks. I'm hearing other reviews talk about European coffee. I just got back from Europe two days ago and I'm drinking the nescafe vanilla macchiato it's like night and day. This Nescafe drink took 4 capsules to get enough flavor (the instructions recommend 2) and it still tastes like flavored water. I've tried to crank up the strength of the various recipes by adding espresso, but espresso looks and tastes like regular coffee and isn't very strong.

After having tried several different Keurig models at retailers, workplaces, and friends' apartments, I do not feel that I'm being harsh by saying this device doesn't live up to industry standards. I believe the Nescafe increased bar pressure system does not derive any more from the ingredients/beans. While this is an excellent business model for selling more capsules vs k-cups, hypothetically the increased varieties of capsules should add the nuance of flavors with additional recipes, but I've found the base espresso as well as the more advanced recipes that incorporate milk all have an insipid, uninspiring taste.

These drinks are simply not pleasurable to drink.

I have a Keurig B60 and the most of the coffee is just so so.This coffee is phenominal. It has a very bold dark, rich and unique flavor..I am reviewing the coffee because unlike other single brew coffee makers, you have no choice other than to use dolce gusto (nestles)coffee in this machine. That might seem as a serious limitation, but believe me it is worth it. I do hope nestles releases some more flavors, especially decaf as there is only one so far........Arabica coffee does have less caffiene then other beans, so that may be their rational for only one flavor..

What I like about the machine is the manual lever. You control the amount of coffee in each cup. Hold the lever longer for weaker brews, shorter for stronger brews...There are two capsules for Latte's, cappucino's, and chocolate, (1 milk and 1 coffee), and 1 capsule for regular coffee...I haven't tried the tea yet...

The capsule holder is very sturdy and since no coffee touches it, rarely requires rinsing.

If you like European strength coffee you will love this coffee...they do have espresso too..

UPDATE: 01/03/2012 In response to concerns of brew temp I measured both my dolce gusto and keurig today. The DG was 184F and the keurig 180F.....Found that interesting since my keurig is set for 192F...

Nescafe Dolce Gusto by Krups KP500950 Circolo Coffee Machine, TitaniumI want to start out by saying, I usually dont drink coffee. It just takes so long to prepare, grind the beans, put the filter, water and wait... This machine is amazing, I put the water in, wait like 30 seconds and then move the lever to the right for hot water. BOOM. The drink is done and it's ready for your tasting pleasure. I got the RED machine because my KitchenAid mixer is Red so I figured I'd continue the color scheme. It's got a nice matte feel to it and everything compacts together with an easy to clean components. In the box, it came with a sampler of different drinks and plus if you register your product you get a free box of capsules (16 in total). I have to say I wish the water tank held more water but its okay. Overall, I would recommend this product to anyone in the market for a fast and delicious cup of joe.

Like the coffee maker. It's shape is unique and bright. The only set back that I can see ,has to be Nescafe coffee since they are the only ones that fit (k-2 cups won't fit). There is limited stores to get the coffee from and not a lot of variety in the coffee choices. It does make an excellent cup of coffee out of the choices available. Wish the coffee was available in more stores closer to where I live.

This thing is one piece of fine art. First of all it makes delicious coffee. Their Cafe Lungo and the Cafe Americano I would say are the best tasting ones. Rich in flavor! The machine is very simple to use. I didnt even have to read the manual or directions. The blue LED light is pretty neat too. It illuminates while the coffee is being made. Awesome coffee machine for the price. I would recommend this to everyone who is a coffee lover!

I have had many different kinds of coffee makers in the past, but NOTHING is as good as this one! I can make a 16oz cappuccino to go in my Contigo travel mug, flavored exactly how I want it (Torani Hazelnut) in about a minute. I can sit at my desk at work sip on my nice hot delicious cappuccino. The lattes, chocochinos, espressos, and cafe americanos are great too!

Bought this machine to replace a worn out Tassimo (Braun version). Coffee comes out just as good and I love the design. Not fully automatic like the Tassimo, but I really can't complain too much. Also wish the water reservoir held more water. So overall it's a 4 star. Hope this line catches on and they develop even more beverage pods for it.

Silvia Version 3 Espresso MachineThis is a beautiful machine! I started learning about brewing espresso at home with a Gaggia Coffee. I've since stepped up to the Silvia and I wish I had bought it right away. The espresso I produce with it is far superior, never sour or bitter if I use the right amount and tamp it properly, and I can make microfoam. I also appreciate its heaviness, good looks, quiet operation and metal steam wand.

Many say and it bears repeating that you will only get the results you are looking for at home if you invest in a burr grinder of at least Rancilio Rocky or Gaggia MDF quality, grind right before brewing and use beans roasted within weeks, not months! I have had disappointing results with other grinders and all preground espresso including expensive Illy, etc.

Shop around and be sure to get free shipping, because this thing weighs a ton. I have seen good package deals where you can get the Silvia and Rocky together; with no tax and free shipping plus some free goodies such as a stainless steel tamper, you will be in business and might have some cash left over for the beans. Of course the instruction booklet is nearly worthless, but you can find some great videos on YouTube to show you what to do with all that stuff once you get it home.

If you have better things to spend your money on, like mortgage and groceries, or if you aren't too picky, look elsewhere; maybe try a stovetop moka pot. If you think you will be making espresso for years to come get this machine, a good grinder and a water filter, and some freshly roasted beans from Intelligentsia; then you will want a collection of little cups for serving your creations, and your friends might begin to think you are an insufferable coffee snob... and at that point, you will be. Trust me, your buddies most likely do not want to hear about your machine's brass portafilter and temperature stability.

This is NOT a cheap hobby. Maybe you should consider supporting your local coffee shop instead! As for me, I'm in too deep. Let me know if someone starts a twelve step program for espresso addicts. Enjoy!

If you are anything like myself, you too have probably seen the many reviews and warning online citing how finicky the Rancilio Silvia is with its wild temperature swings and its taste for exact grinds. Like myself, you too are not bothered by any of that and are still considering the Silvia.

So in all fairness, there are plenty of GREAT things about this machine; It is good-looking (but design-wise it fails to make any statement, it is neither modern nor retro, doesn't look commercial but also doesn't look like a home machine). Great construction too (though slightly crude). It has features galore; brass boiler and brew group, large tank, ample steaming pressure etc. It is famously reliable and been made with little change for over a decade. On paper it seems to have it all, and it is the only machine of its class at this price point. The question is however, "can it pull a decent shot of espresso?" The short answer for it is, yes, it certainly can but not straight out of the box on its own. It will require additional equipment, time and investment.

First, spend at least a $350 on a burr grinder. Yes, you've heard this before and refused to believe it. It's true. This machine is so picky about grind that it will change on you with the room temperature and humidity. Be prepared to dump lots of shots to the garbage on a regular basis while re-adjusting. Let's assume your tamping technique is perfect, (and that you are using a good tamper -not the wrong-size plastic joke that comes with this machine, frankly an insult, don't even try it). With that in mind, some of the finest grinds from top-of-the-line grinders will yield extraction faster than the speed of light (double shot in 8 seconds), producing sour shot with poor crema. Grind just 0.1 point too fine and you will get a slow burnt, bitter drizzle from even the sweetest roast. Adding the minimal capable burr grinder realistically means that you should be willing to spend $1000 for the entire experience, so don't let the $650 price tag fool you. There is also $25-$80 you need to spend on a tamper. This is a must. In short, comparison-shop the Silvia against $1000 machines that need no grinder like the Expobar Office Pulser, Pasquini Livietta or La Pavoni PC-16 -not against the Francis-Francis X1 or the Baby Gaggia which may not seem to be at the same class at all but will give you much better shots with far less overall investment.

Secondly, be prepared to learn to temperature-surf. Temperature swings are a major issue with this machine, so even with the perfect grind and tamping; your shot can still easily burn or come out weak and sour. Temperature surfing is acceptable when you try to improve a really great shot to Godliness, but if you can't achieve merely a consistent basic decent shot without surfing, you will quickly find it to be time-consuming and laborious; an annoyance that is not much of a joy as a morning routine.

Now there are hundreds of guides and videos all over the internet on how to temperature surf the Rancilio Silvia online (I especially liked "Cheating Mrs. Silvia"). There is even an entire aftermarket dedicated to digital temperature controllers for this machine. Wait, wait, can someone please stop the madness? Common sense... Doesn't the fact that this machine cannot brew espresso straight out of the box without all this nonsense raise some red flags to you? Shouldn't you expect a $650 machine to -at the very least give you some basic version of espresso without turning you into a hacker?

I can understand Rancilio not wanting to fix the brew group. After all, this grind-fussiness sells them thousands of their Rocky model grinders every year. I do however find it BAFFLING that after 10+ years and 3 versions of this machine, the temperature control issue had not been addressed. Thermocouples and PIDs are cheap and reliable, and so are dial thermometers and pressure gauges -which could be a lifesaver for users of this machine. In fact, these are standard features on far cheaper machines. What gives?

So like you, I too thought I would get over the learning curve and can win this machine over in spite of reviews and warnings. I am an ex-barista who had the pleasure to work on anything from La Pavoni, Gaggia, Expobar, Brasillia, Pasquini and Elektra to Francis-Francis and Ascado, using some of the world's finest beans and pro-grinders like Mazzer. I am embarrassed to admit that I spent the past week tossing about 400 shots to the trash before coming to terms with the fact that this machine is not reasonably designed to deliver a decent shot on a regular basis without extreme fuss and expensive grinder, which I have no space for in my Manhattan kitchen. (I also don't believe that my wife or guests would be able to operate it). At this price point I would take a La Pavoni or Expobar machine any day over this. And if you really only have $650 to spend, then get a Francis-Francis X1 or Gaggia Classic or even the super-automatic Gaggia Brera. You WILL get consistently far better shots and be able to use a wider range of grinds (even ESE pods) and some cash in your pocket too. The Rancilio Silvia has so much potential but I am sadly sending it back and getting a more capable machine. My recommendation: don't be tempted.

This machine is the perfect blend of quality, durability, and ease of repair for a home machine under $500. It makes espresso that rivals any you can buy at a coffee house.

I've been making home espresso for 25 years and have used many different machines of various prices which all died. I bought one for $250 from Starbucks which died in one year. They told me parts were not available. This machine is practically bullet-proof. I've had it for over 5 years and it is still running like new. Sure it hurts to spend this much on an espresso machine, but how many $250 machines will you go through? Learn from my mistake(s) and get a good one.

All the parts inside are commercial or semi-commercial grade. Anyone who works on commercial espresso machines can work on this one, and the parts are readily available. It's all stainless and cast iron. Very nice.

It has a 3-way solenoid, which you want, trust me. The 3-way solenoid lets pressure escape from the basket when you switch off the pump so that the coffee grounds fall out of the portafilter handle in a solid little disk instead of a soupy mess.

You DO NEED a good grinder made for espresso to use this machine. The pump puts out a solid 9 bar, which means most grinders can't get the coffee fine enough. A burr grinder is the only way to go. This makes the grounds fine enough that a shot will take about 20 seconds to make. Any less time for a shot and it means your coffee is too coarse. If you don't want to buy a grinder right now, there are some good preground espresso coffees in a can (such as Illy), but it will go stale fast. You'll want the grinder.

If you want great espresso, and a reliable machine, you can't go wrong with the Silvia. Take a bit of time to learn proper technique and you'll be happy with this one.

Miss Silvia is not for everyone, but she can reward a little effort and patience with truly great espresso. If, after reading this, you still think $200 is too much to spend on a grinder, look instead at machines with a pressurized portafilter (Saeco/Starbucks Barista).

Start with the freshest coffee. You might as well discover home roasting. It's very economical, easy, and fun. In fact, you can quickly pay for Miss Silvia with your savings when you pay $3-5/lb for green coffee!

Trust me on this: Your grinder is FAR MORE IMPORTANT than your machine, and few grinders under $200 have a fine enough adjustment mechanism to find the "sweet spot" for the particular bean you're using. Grind controls extraction rate, and you're shooting for 20sec for a double shot. If one click on the grinder throws your extraction 5-6 seconds...you'll quickly become frustrated. Good espresso grinders have at least 40-50 settings. Of course, you need to time your shots to get an idea of what is happening.

Give her time to warm up. Google "silvia temperature surfing" to learn how to manually control the brewing temperature, or "PID Silvia" to give Miss Silvia digital temperature control (you now have a $1000 machine for $550).

Put it all together, and you'll soon see just how good espresso can be. Should you currently be addicted to Starbucks, this will cure you. You might even start looking forward to the morning's first espresso shots around dinner time!

Why Miss Silvia? A reasonably sized brass boiler (thermal mass). Heavy chromed brass portafilter (more thermal mass). Three-way Solenoid valve (depressurizes the group head after pulling a shot). Very well documented on-line. Easily serviceable with widely available parts. Good looking, too!

Final recommendation: If you can't afford BOTH Miss Silvia and the grinder, buy a great grinder and an inexpensive but good Gaggia with lots of brass but no 3-way valve.

I have owned several different expresso machines in different price ranges. Hands down, this machine is the best I've ever used. The machine works exactly as it is supposed to I use it every day, sometimes a couple times per day and the espresso never changes it's always delicious, and the steamed milk comes out perfectly. I've even left the machine on all day a couple of times, and it still does not affect the machine it keeps working like it's brand new. The only downside is that it takes about 45 minutes for this machine to heat up. HOWEVER, there are websites out there that can tell you how to get around this and have your shot of espresso in about 10 minutes.

Nespresso D121-US-BK-NE1 Citiz Espresso Maker with Aeroccino Milk Frother, Black

I bought a machine very similar to this one nine months ago. For six months, I loved it. Then it began not puncturing the pods. I tried to get the Nespresso people to help, but none of their advice worked. I kept using the milk frother, but a week ago it stopped working. I cannot recommend any Nespresso product after this experience.
